Alright, so I finally got a bike (93 Ninja 600).
I think what I'm supposed to do now is find an insurance agent, get insurance and the RMV-1 form from them, and then take that to the RMV to get my Title and Registration.
Then after that, it's an inspection and then I'm officially okay to go on the road?
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
I need suggestions on agents near my location (Blackstone, MA) and inspection stations, and your personal experiences with said places if you care to share.
Thanks.
i think you also have to get an avatar that we havent seen on the wera board![]()

You got it. First find an insurance agent, they'll get your insurance setup, then the RMV-1 form they fill out for you goes to the registry. Plus you should be getting the title signed over to you from the previous owner...then you sign the title and hand it to the registry, who will mail you a new one in your name.
Ask the insurance agents you call if they can handle registering the bike...many will do it for you which makes it a lot easier.

Excellent. I actually have the title already. Looks like I just need to find an agent who will register the bike for meOriginally posted by slaps76

Does Commerce cover motorcycles? I actually have Commerce now, but I didn't think they covered bikes. Maybe I'll give them a call.Originally posted by McBiggity

They cover bikes.
I use them. They seem ok.
Though they didnt have a clue about what a
"track day" was.
Like that commercial about
saddlebags !
You're right on the order:
1) Bill of Sale
Need to take that to the RMV to pay the sales tax
2) Insurance Company
They make out the initial RMV-1. Can't comment on agents, since I work for an insurance company in Boston and used one of our agencies out there.
3) RMV
Take the BoS and stamped (the insurance co needs to stamp it) RMV-1 in order to register it.
4) Inspection
Closest MA motorcycle inspections stations to Blackstone are in Bellingham. I took my CBR to the Mendon Street Garage, 74 Mendon Street, Bellingham, MA 02019. Don't mind the Harley's, he services all makes & models. Pretty nice guy.
Things to remember (especially about $$$):
You'll probably need 1/4 - 1/3 of the total annual insurance payment as a downpayment.
Sales tax is 5% of what you paid for the bike, payable to the Commonwealth of MA (taxachusetts)
Inspection was $15 if I remember correctly, since it's only safety inslection.
Hope to see you on the road, soon.
They cover bikes, but you'll need to have a new policy written just for the bike, since it's a different type of vehicle. No multi-vehicle discounts will apply to bikes in MA.Originally posted by hqp921

BTW, if you have AAA, you get a decent discount for Commerce, so it's worth the cost for AAA. Commerce is the ONLY insurance company in the state that does that. (funny, since it's supposed to be regulated)
Great, thanks man!Originally posted by 97BladeRider

You're break down of the $ stuff is good: now I don't need to do it myself.
Thanks for the Mendon Garage thing - it's good to have something local.
If you don't see me ON the road soon, check any bikers on the side of the road trying to pick up their bike...![]()
The premiums are regulated by the state. Group discounts, like the one from AAA, are negotiated between the insurance company and the company providing the discount.Originally posted by 97BladeRider

ZX-6Originally posted by 97BladeRider
Is the bike a ZX-6 or a Ninja 600R?
I think they started making the ZX-6 in 92 or 93.
I can't comment on the price of the MSF, since (I'm going to get jumped all over for this) I never took the course back when I started riding in the mid 80's.Originally posted by hqp921

I actually intend on taking a refresher, that is if they offer any advice on technique like counter-steering and lean angles for harder turns. (or should I just do a track day for that?)
I took the ERC and it was "good"
I got to take it for free being in the Military. I did learn but I don't see the benifits outweighing the cost. Just go to a parking lot with someone who has taken the course and run through the drills.
I do see the benefit of taking the Beginners course!
And I did get a discount on my Insurance.![]()

Do a trackday, Tony's is a good facility for learning. Ask an instructor.
