The non-SM DRZ has inferior forks, the SM has updated USD forks. Something to consider.
Like I said, MSRP is like 7200... paying 7500, or even 7200, would be pretty stupid.
Then why did you mention the new one you dummy lol
Because the first one that was suggested to me was a 2013 and about the same price and it wasn't even motard setup.
Also if I do go buy new (which RIGHT NOW I am not considering, that can change any time) I have the option to finance.
I have never paid MSRP on anything in my entire life so don't worry about the price listed for whatever It is 7200-7500 it doesn't matter much.
That 2013 listed in nh with 250 miles for 6k... show up with 5k and see if he bites :)
6k plus convert to motard plus the work will put me way over 7200$ more like $8000+. It's just stupid.
Even at 5k the savings aren't justifiable comparing to buying soemthing brand new and already set up.
Right? Remember my mechanic skills are below average so most of the work need to be done I will need help

2002+ DRZ400S comes with right-side-up cartridge forks. Both compression and rebound dampening are externally adjustable. By my read, they aren't bad forks and the SM USD forks aren't dramatically better, just different.
Savas, I suggest you find an SM if that's what you want. Converting a DRZ isn't that hard. But it does require some wrenching. I converted one because:
A) It was cheaper (on the order of $1-2k cheaper, by my half-ass guess) to buy my -S and convert using fleabay bits bought piecemeal
B) I wanted the project, I'm sick and I like projects
C) I wanted to have 2 sets of wheels and be able to convert from dirt to street mode and back
D) I don't care what it looks like (used S/E models will show some dirty-bike wear)
None of these things seem to apply to you.
You should be able to bring home an '08-10 ish DRZ400SM for $4500-6000 easily. Were I you, I'd do that.
Just for reference.. I have gone through 3 iterations on trying to get the front brake setup correctly for my SM conversion. I have dropped about $200 and a couple weeks total wait time on ordering caliper adapter brackets and STILL don't have the thing ridable. My case is a little weird because I refuse to just click the order button on a motostrano or similar turnkey kit. But still, there are quirks. Not worth it given your goal, IMO.
Bubs you seem to have a pretty good read on me.
That's what I'm basically looking at. There are few exceptions. I would get Kens bike and have smutty or whoever else can help me converting to motard keep the extra wheels for swapping etc and be happy.
But that's a bike from an owner who I know takes care of his stuff and the price is right.
That's not something I can do via Craigslist.
So I'm still looking for a ready to go sumo but I keep my options open.
Just to rehash the idea of a wr450. I paid 4500 for my 09 wr450f in 2012. I think it had 1200 miles and showed 0 signs of wear. It was converted to sm by the dealer when the original owner bought it. So it came with street legal with 17s and dirt wheels. Only thing I had to buy was a sm rotor ( brembo 320). I would like to mention reliability but the bike is currently loaded on the truck and will be on its way to VIR as soon as I'm done typing this and id rather not jinks myself.
I will definitely try to get that one Chris. I contacted the seller already
Wirelessly posted
Where were you when I was selling my drz man.....
I think that would be a great deal. with 250 miles and the exhaust system he put on. I'll buy it from you in six months for 4800 :)
I think it is priced pretty reasonably as well. Practically new. Turn-key SM. Already mod'ed up nicely.
Needs case guards ($40) though. Chipper was not kidding with that one.
Aight! It's my birthday! Find me a decent deal and I'll go buy it right now
Are we set on a drz400sm? Or would you consider converting a non sm?
All the cool May babies rock DRZ's.. just sayin'.
