I'm thinking of getting a GoPro camera for filming several activities. The main one being my son's Pop Warner football team for film review. My only concern is the lack of a zoom. If any one has one that I can borrow for an evening to film practice I would really appreciate it. I need to make sure that when we use a digital zoom on the projector or the video software, we don't lose the picture quality. If you have ever broken down football film you know that being able to see the color of the center's nail polish is critical.
Pete, if the GoPro thing doesn't work out, consider trying one of the Contour cameras(formerly known as VholdR). If mine was HD I'd offer it to you but I'm a cheap bastard so I went with the basic setup...still provides decent video tho but not for your application.
The film is shot from the top of the stands, about 30-40 yards from the center of the field, on a tripod. I just need to see is the GoPro or Vhold R can pick up enough detail, or do the players look like ants.
Keep in mind the GoPro is a wide angle lens and can cause perspective distortion.
Edit: If Jim is done using my GoPro you are welcome to borrow it and see how it goes.

The vhold is degsys and yes, you can borrow it.
I just got a Flip HD video recorder. I have yet to test it out enough to give it a full review, but for its size it works pretty good and is simple to use. I noticed the lighting is critical, as the indoor recordings don't come out anywhere close to the recordings done outside. The zoom seems to be very limited on it. Our application for it is to record our son and it seems to do it pretty well. Not sure it would be good for recordings 30+ yards away.
