Re: Brand Matter or just Preference?
You say your are just starting out with bikes. That is even more reason to not spend $10K on a brand new bike.
I am far from a noob when it comes to bikes/riding and I have an absolute blast riding around on my 12 year old SV650.
Are you into bikes because you like riding or you want to look cool?

Re: Brand Matter or just Preference?
Joe, sounds like the dealers got in your ear and planted fear, doubt & uncertainty about a used bike.....they are all trained to do it....the whole "well you don't know what you are buying when you buy privately"....
Don't fall for it.... there's plenty of used bikes out there that are taken much better care of than at a dealer.

Re: Brand Matter or just Preference?
If you buy from someone on NESR, you can be reasonably certain that if they're an active member, they will be pretty straight up with you about what the condition of the bike is.
If you buy from a dealer, you can be reasonably certain you'll be paying enough markup to compensate for the 15 other bikes they've had sitting on the floor for months that they can't sell.
Don't be a moron.

No I didn't say I didn't want to buy used. Hell here are the pro's and cons I have come up with.
Used Pros
Ability to maintain myself
Broken In
Potential Aftermarket Modifications
Generally Lower Price
Used Cons
IM AN IDIOT and don't know what to look for or not for :)
New Pros
Waranty
New Bike I know everything that has been done to it and services.
New Cons
Can't perform all maintenance myself without voiding warranty.
Assraped
The fact of the matter is (and I openly admit it) I don't know all that much about bikes. I could see the wrong person taking advantage by selling me a bike that is a POS dressed with brandy new fairings etc.
As for learning... I WANT to learn, that's the only thing that pisses me off about having a brand new bike under warranty, I can't do half the shit myself without voiding the warranty.

The good thing about NESR is that people here can be quite helpful. I'm pretty sure if you ask nice enough, you can arrange for another NESRian to come with you to look at a used bike and tell you if it's good or not.
And if that bike ends up breaking, you might be able to get a NESRian to help you fix it. Hell you might learn a thing or three!

Re: Brand Matter or just Preference?
Best way to learn is to ask for advice. You have that part down.
Second step is to listen to that advice. You need to work on that part.

I am no expert, but would be glad to look over a bike that you are looking to buy. I am sure others on here would be willing to help you out too.

Re: Brand Matter or just Preference?
What about that GSXR 1K on here in nice shape for short money?

I'm at a loss, if I had already not listened I would have the bike in my driveway right now but nope no bike out there.... yet.

Re: Brand Matter or just Preference?
See that is the thing about this community. If you are an honest person and sell a bike here, you have nothing to worry about. If you try to swindle someone, you'll get hung out to dry.

I'll ask again, why do you think this? Is your credit that bad that a bank won't give you a loan? If that's the case, that's probably a sign that you shouldn't have another loan.
You don't want a problem? Then buy a bike from somebody here that has a solid reputation. Get somebody you trust to inspect it with you. It's not that hard. I knew very little about street bikes when I bought my SV, and walked away with a problem free bike for cheap money, with cheap insurance, and no monthly payment.

You ask but you don't take it.
Get a used bike from the 1990s to EARLY 2000's, Stop looking at 2009 and up CBR 600rr's.
If you want to learn how to work on a Bike get a Hawk GT for $2000. Awesome little bike, plenty of easy upgrades to learn to do and it is kinda a unique bike with a solid community.
The problem is I think you are one of those that thinks the bike is a part of your image... Nothing wrong with that but until you can let it go and be happy to be seen on an older bike you are doomed to repeat yourself.
All the bikes I have owned in the last 10 years I paid cash or paid them off within a year and I have had some cool bikes. A 998 to name just one. :D
Buy that 650r for 2800 and be done with it. You could sell it for $3500 in the spring if you don't like it.

Re: Brand Matter or just Preference?
I'd go for that Ninja 650 if I were you. Plenty fast, better on gas, less insurance, still the SuperSport looks you are looking for, cheap cheap cheap.
Disagree?

The reason I am asking is because first I have never ridden a GSXR. The dealer stated that the GSXR is the bike that sells out every year which means everyone has them :) not so sure I want the same thing everyone else has but...
They told me they could put me on the following bikes
2011 GSXR 750 - $11,500
2011 GSXR 600 - $9,900
I was going to buy a used bike however I don't have the equity to buy person to person as I will only have about $4100 cash to put down. The dealership also has a finance company RFC which will finance me. Knowing this fact the dealer has the upper hand and wants to charge me
$8,500 for a 2009 CBR600RR with 8k on it which I know is way too much but since they have the upper hand they wont budge from the price.
So I am debating on just buying a new bike for the cost difference and I think they know that which is why they wont budge.
Thoughts?
Interesting that the MSRP gap between the 600 and the 750 is $400, but the selling price gap is much larger.
More importantly never let the dealer have the upper hand. IF, IF you have to finance you can always go to your own bank or credit union. Maybe if you had to have a KTM RC8R racing version, or some other almost unabtainable bike, but for most of us buying main stream bikes there are always deals to be had, especially in the New England off season.
And if you buy new you can work on your own bike without voiding the warranty (just like with a car). Come to think of it most mfg warranties are 1 year. In that time what normally has to be done? Probably a couple oil changes and chain adjustments depending on how many miles you ride.

Oh, but what if it turns out to be a lemon? SURELY he's better off spending an extra 9 THOUSAND DOLLARS, plus higher insurance rates & finance charges on the GSXR750. I mean, just the piece of mind that you get from buying new is worth 9 grand alone, easy!

Well he COULD buy 3 of those Ninja 650's for the same price. One out of those three is bound to run for at least a year.
