I'm in need of some new tires for my 04 R1 before the VIR trackday in March. I really like the Dunlops that came on it from the factory but i can't seem to find them anywhere besides the dealer, and i'm not paying close to $400 for a set of OE tires from the dealerThose would be my first chose if i can find a reasonable price for them. I got 6k miles worth of squidly posing commute time on them..they've probably still got another 1k left of life.
Second chose is the Dunlop 208, price is rite ($220 shipped for a set, rear 190/50/17, front 120/70/17) I've been happy with these tires in the past and would use them again.
Third chose, Pilot Power. It's only third chose because it's more expensive. With the riding i do (90% commute/ 5% squidly shit, and sadly only %5 sportriding) having the "best" tire out there isn't much of a concern to me,
What's with the R1 "C" tire in the pilot power?
190/50ZRX 17 rear (R1) $149.99 plus $9 shipping
120/70ZRX 17 "C" front (R1) $99.99 plus $9 shipping
Any advice or feedback?
Any ideas where i can get a set of Dunlop sportmax 218's like the OE tires on the R1?
Thanks![]()

I'm not sure if there is still a deal to be had, but when I was up at Nault's Ducati in Manchester NH in early/mid January, Scott was offering a set of Pilot Powers for I believe $280 (installation extra). If you check them out, tell him "Timmy" with the S4R sent you.
I went with the Pilot Powers, they are sitting in my room now![]()
They are suppose to last a little longer too, based on what I've read at least.
F: $96.95
R: $145.95

I know that one of the board sponsors was running some good pricing on them too (very close to the above - what I paid), I'd have went with him had I known.

quick reviewDunlop 218: 8- Great tire for being fitted OEM.
Traction was good/great (purple cycles, and greasy at times)
Decent in the rain.
Mileage was excellent.
These tires were greasy as could be at the end of there life.![]()

you didn't say what the stockers were in the beginning of your post, and I was too lazy to read all the way down to the bottom, but this place is awesome for prices, and they ship in a few days
I've been real happy with my 208's. I was in the same boat as you, nobody carry's the OE dunlops for my bike. If you are 90% commute (as am I) then go for the cheapest performance tire that will last the longest.

Go for the Powers!
While the D208s were okay, and the D218s better, I'd spoon some grippier rubber on there for a track day. No way would I ride the 10R w/Dunlops on the track. They just barely hold up on the street. Then again, that is an R1...![]()
A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. - John Stuart Mill
Mark - the "C" designation means nothing. It just denotes a batch made for OEM fitment. The company - Yamaha, Ducati and BMW for example - wanted a tire that was produced for their fitment and on their shelf.
It is made on the same production line with no differences.
Michelin Pilot Power production is split between France and Spain. There are slight differences in how the casing in made between either factory - you can see this on the inside of the air chamber. Smooth is the new French process, and snake-like skin is the older Spanish process.
However - both tires perform EXACTLY the same.
Also - asking for a "C" tire will cost more bucks. It's a waste of money!

if they barely hold up for the 10 i guess the r1 would shred them.Originally posted by ChR1s

the powers weren't available when my 218's expired so i went with the diablo corsa's which i love, and are holding up very well.
they may last longer than any tire iv'e ever run (more than 3k)
btw: imho the 208's SUCK
if they came on the 04 i would had scrapped them before the first ride.
forget the 218's and go with the powers
