    Good carma

About 5 years ago I blew up my 620 monster. Because of the circumstances the insurance company covered it, totaled it, and took it. The whole thing happened so fats I never got a chance to give them the red key. If you know Ducatis you know that you would be screwed with out this key. I hung on to it and was gonna post up on the Ducati board about it. I forgot and just put the idea out of my mind.

So I get a call out of the blue today from some guy. He says he ended up with it after all these years and wanted to know if I still had the key and how much I wanted for it. I told him it's his if he comes to meet me. So the guy is pretty stoked since it cost a pretty penny to replace every thing that he would need to without the key. I'm meeting him tomorrow.

Glad I can get a monster back on the road

Holy shit!!! ....I was just reading , in one of my Ducati forums, about a guy asking for advice on the forum about this bike he bought from some company (insurance company maybe..i forgot). He was trying to track down the previous owner for the red key. Everyone on the board was telling him to call the previous owner etc....

    I shit you not!!

I'll try to track down the post, I remember it was a few weeks back, I just have to see what forum it was on etc etc

Haha, that would be funny if it was the same dude..

To code your ECU or to get a new black key coded. The ducati keys have a chip in them so the bike will only start with "YOUR" keys, Theres an immobilizer system. If you lose your keys or want to get more made you need that red key to "code" the new ones....or it's a royalpain in the ass to get new keys, so I'm told. You're able to order new keys with your "code card" but they would be useless without the red key..

That's awesome! I had an '04 Multi a couple years back with no red key. I had a hell of a time selling it without that fucking key, probably lost a good $500 on the deal because of it. My house is still a mess from when I was looking for that key.

Good on you. The amount of guys that join www.ducati.ms and say "I just bought a [salvage] bike without the red key, they're like $50 right?" and then get heartbroken when they get the real news is.. wel, heartbreaking.

    Re: Good carma

There haven't been issues with the red key BS for years now. Before you had to replace the cluster, ignition and ECU if you lost the red key and the immobilizer was set off, about $2K and it can happen again. Then the Nemesis ECU came out and it doesn't have an immobilizer but that is still $1K. Then some guy in Sweden learned how to unlock the ECU and disable the immobilizer, pretty sure he charges less than $500 with all the shipping and turn around time is about a week. Last I heard motowheels is getting the software to do it too and they were going to charge a little less and you don't have to deal with international shipping.

    Re: Good carma

    Soooooo

I just meet up with the guy and he told me the story of the bike. So douche bag bought it at auction then sold it to a girl for $3200. That's with a blown engine and a salvage title. Then charges her another $1000 for new 620 engine. So she is $4200 deep with a bike that don't run and will be a bitch to register. I paid $4200 for the bike with 12 miles on it with a clean title and some minor scratches. So yes the kid is a dick and the girl is a moron.

This guy just bought it recently and tried to get it running not knowing about the red key fiasco. Found out with some research that he needs the red key. Opened up the folder that the last morons had and sure enough my info was inside.

So we drank a couple beers and he wouldn't let me leave without taking $20. I told him I didn't want anything and that it was good karma to just make things right. He said well then him not giving me anything would be bad karma for him. So whatever. Hope the monster will live again!

Wow, could this be the bike that naked-daytrader listed on the deal of the century thread? I was going to get that thing too.
