so I cut up the sucker.
six hours later after preping and cleaning were done, i stopped here. so how do you put this clip on? small C-clamp? there's no way you can squeeze with your thumb. i tried. this is temporary until i have a chance to rivet. i have rivet type master link.

Kham go to Sears and buy a cheap pipe flaring tool - it will have an end on it that looks like a plumb bob weight (big metal pyramid). Then take a large C-clamp and take off the foot (wiggly part) replacing it with the piece I described above from the flaring tool.
You'll end up with a C clamp with a sharp metal point on one end. Then you clamp that down on each of the rivets a little bit at a time (dont over do it just keep going back and forth on them). The flaring end on the c-clamp will mushroom out the rivets as it pushes them down.
I got one at home if you want to pick it up - made it last fall.
I ordered the DID chain tool last week.. when it comes in I can help you install your rivet link if you want...
I am redoing mine.. I did it without the correct tool cause I was feeling cheap.. it has been fine for a while but all of a sudden it freaked me out as I think the pins moved a little. So I thought I would suck it up since I have the money now.
It's a massive PITA to do it without the correct tool as the pins are not fixed to the link that they are installed in at the factory.. if you're not super careful you end up with the plates not being parallel and you get a kink in the chain. It took me a long time to get something serviceable when I did mine and I always figured it was not as strong as if I'd bought the tool at the time.

Something as simple as pliers or needle nose vise grips to set the link itself to the proper depth. Place the clip over the master pins with the larger hole over a pin, and the open end against the other pin (once the link is set to depth, you'll see the groves the clip sits in) and make sure the rounded part (not the open end) is facing the rotation direction of the chain. I've found regular pliers will snap the clip into place pretty easy.
Still not sure what the big fuss is about master clips vs rivet type. If a master clip fails there are usually 2 reasons.
1. Which knowone likes to admitt, you installed it wrong.
2. The clip got worn out and broke off...which again would say it's your fault for not properly caring for your chain

a rivet link has 100% strength as the rest of the chain while a clip link is something like 75-85% the strength of the chain.
Because thats what DID says on there site and on the back of the box. But yea i guess you shouldnt listen to the manufacturer right lol. I mean we're not riding dirt bikes here, would you really want your chain to fail and take you with it?
If you want to get into chain strength and getting percentages using numbers, I think you'll find that any modern 1000cc sportbike has about 20-25% of the power and torque capable of breaking a chain. using the high number of 25% power and the lower number of 75% chain strength, that's a 50% safety factor![]()

Kham where are you located? there are plenty of members here with the tool to rivet it that would be willing to help. if you aren't too far from me I'd bring mine over.

A short-order cook?
My new RK Gold x-ring chain came coated in that 'Crisco'-cosmoline-smegma... just clean it of with a kero soaked rag, wipe down and lube with whatever stuff you like.
I have this rivet tool (bottom link) from Niche Cycle in Fla. bought on Ebay, good value $55 bucks w/shipping, works just like the Motion Pro one and bits are interchangeable... (Instructions here: http://www.motionpro.com/images/docu...58.I8-0058.pdf )
Works great:
