Hey guys, It has been a LONG winter for me and i just barely got the bike out on the road. I rode it to work twice this week and only rode it back once.
I was on Amherst St in Nashua at about 8pm on Thursday, 40 degrees out and for the life of me i don't entirely know what happened. a car in front of me pulled into my lane and i hit my brakes and felt the front tire start to slide (not sure if it was just cold road or if there was something on it...) next thing i know i am on the ground with someone telling me not to get up. did a quick check on my extremities and they were all there and all moved on their own. So i got up and ran over and picked up my bike to assess that. Just as i picked it up a police officer showed up on scene and did the requisite questions and check if i was ok.
Apparently i was on enough adrenalin to pass because he let me go and i rode off. and only got a couple blocks before pulling over to actually look over the bike for myself out of traffic. some people i work with has been following me as they saw the whole thing and they tried to convince me to put my bike in their car (still not sure how they thought that was going to happen, but it was a nice gesture). We compromised and they convinced me to call Keira (wife) and that i should only ride it 3 miles back to work instead of 40 miles back home.
in the 1 hour wait for Keira to get me i sat in their car and the pain started to set in and i was glad i wasn't riding. on the way home it got to the point that i told Keira to detour to the ER to get checked out. and found this:
Probably have some broken ribs too, but can't X-ray those without raising my arm, and nothing they can do with broken ribs anyway, so i said skip it...
Gear saved my noggin, face and rash on my arms and torso:
But the bike certainly held up better than i did![]()

Wow. Frame sliders and gear FTW. Sounds like it could have been alot worse, so its good to hear it's only bad as it is. Hope this doesn't mess up your season for too long.
Aw damn, dudeSorry to hear that, Rob.
Heal up soon!

Nasty fracture, but I'm sure it'll heal fine, and you'll be back out there in no time. Glad it wasn't worse, but next time, just take the ambulance ride to the ER. Even if you think you're ok, between the worry and confusion of the accident, injuries can be easily overlooked.
I did the same thing in 2004 with an incident in T2. Very painful and shoulders are a bitch to live without. You'll be back in action in no time though.
We've never met, but I'm right in town. Hit me up if you need anything.

Thanks for the offer. Since we don't know you, I am actually Rob's wife, and ride as well. Maybe once he's back in the saddle the three of us can head out for a quick ride to meet each other!
Also, FWIW, if you guys ever crash, please know that it will be better for your wife if YOU make the call (assuming you are able to). Rob was the one who called me and (granted, I have a bit more experience talking to downed riders than the average wife, but....) I could tell just by talking to him exactly what he thought he needed, and exactly what he really needed. It was still a hard phone call to get though.

Sorry to hear about your accident. Seems like you will be ok and the bike too. Speedy recovery to you both.
Glad you are relatively ok!

Jeez rob. Glad you're relatively ok. Take care.
I have broken both my collar bones. Not a fun injury. Just sleep in bed sith your arms crossed. Get used to using one hand for about a week. I hope you don't wipe your ass with that hand because you wont be for a while. Whatever you do keep that arm in the sling for a good 4 weeks and let it set. The worst thing for a collar bone is movement.
Heal up!!!

Good thing you didn't drive all the way home! Wow. I blew my shoulder apart about 5 years ago. Best way I found to sleep is on a recliner..with a stomach full of Percocet. Get well soon.
Sorry to hear it! Heal up quick. Clavicle hurts quite a bit right? Damn...sorry bro.
You'll be back in the saddle in not time Rob! 5/24!!
Heal up Rob.
Call me if you need anything. (Everyone says that...there should be some standard piece of something you could ask for to make everyone happly. Don't know what that is though!)
Great write up...if you come to any futher conclusions or lessons you could share please do. You're a smart and experienced rider so I'm sure what you leared would be helpful to all.
And since mzdagrl wasn't with you you weren't staring at her ass....!
