    Re: Contour Vs. GoPro

Got the Hero2 a few days ago. Got the moto edition with the LCD view screen attachment, not sure how you could get one of these without the LCD view screen.. Really impressed so far.

I really don't see a need for it. It goes on the race bike and comes off at the end of the weekend and then get's downloaded. If I want to watch a vid at the track I have the laptop there in the pits. Seems like a worthless add on to me.

Im more referring to trying different mounting positions and using it for other purposes. I can only assume that if you want to try a new mounting place you need to mount it, get some footage, dismount the camera and go to a computer to view the footage to see if it was mounted in the correct angle/etc.

With the LCD screen its point and adjust and record without any guesswork of whether or not the view/angle s what you want or not.

I only used it this weekend on my mountain bike and was imagining if I didn't have the LCD screen I would have had no idea if it was capturing the angle/view I wanted.

Curious about this too. They say its rated for some obnoxious high speed, but I'm curious about how it holds up with the shape of the fairings. Either way I'd probably hook up some sort of clip/tether just in case, they recommend doing that anyway a lot of the time.

We had one stuck all over a car and on a couple of rental scooters when I was in Key West. It fell off when we tried to stick it to the side of a scooter with like...textured paint. It stuck to anything with smooth, clean clear coat.

I would keep a safety tether on it either way... but that's me.

We had a name for those in the Army.

They were called "Idiot ropes" or "Idiot string." I even have one on my MassPass.

I have a Contour GPS in the classifieds. Great little camera.
I like that you can link it to your Droid or IPhone to change settings and set view.

The GPS has Bluetooth not sure about the Roam.

The Roam is not Bluetooth capable. The other current Contour cameras are.

That is one problem with the Roam; your options of framing a shot are 1) lining up the mount, snapping a quick vid, then checking it out with a PC or laptop or 2) eyeballing it and rolling the dice. I use technique 2.

Used my GoPro for a good amount of time yesterday and I gotta say I am super impressed.

The sound is amazing....absolutely no wind noise. How do other cameras compare to this?

The mounts are impressive too. I used the suction mount on multiple points on the bike and it held tight at highway speeds. The wide angle impressed the hell outta me too....couldnt believe how much area it captured to my left and right when I mounted it on my tail.

I have been underwhelmed here with my contour. Terrible dealing with wind noise.

    You be the judge:

This is mounted on the mirror stock outside the fairing/windscreen.

That's to be expected. Contours have the mic at the front of the camera if I'm not mistaken, with no shroud etc. My old Gopro came with a full covered case door as well as an open one and with the open case it reverbed and sounded like crap. The closed case helped a bit. Try taping over the mic with painters tape and see if it makes a difference. At worst, just tome down the level when you edit.

    Re: Contour Vs. GoPro

Good tip with the tape. I will have to try that.

I think I want to mount the camera on the helmet and possibly fiddle with a lower mount, maybe off the crash guard, luggage rack, or passenger pegs.

The camera's mic also picks up some sort of rattle at like 6-7 RPM. (Read: leaving nearly every stop!) I don't hear this rattle when riding. Also the exhaust sounds like total ass on camera.

It could be that I'm half deaf and just don't hear the rattle-we are talking about a Suzuki here.
It could be the exhaust really does sound like ass-we are talking about a Suzuki here.

    Re: Contour Vs. GoPro

Yeah gopro all the way. I can vouch for the suction cup mount working great even at high speeds. If you're using it on track, just make sure you safety wire it on or something.

And the gopro with the waterproof case is the best for moto applications. Everything else is going to give you terrible wind noise. I've been using one for a couple of years and I love it. About to upgrade to the hero 2!

    Re: Contour Vs. GoPro

The tape will not make much difference with the Contour's audio. Folks literally have to wrap the entire camera in foam to eliminate the wind noise. Turn down the mic gain (using the PC software), do the external mic mod or live with it.
