I am perfectly happy on my ZX6 and have no plan to ever move to a liter bike. I push it damn close to the limit every day i go out for twisties and i love the handling, high revs and everything about the 600s that i have no desire to 'move up'
My first bike was a 90 fizzer 600

Street riding and track riding are day and night.
Straight is pretty fun too. If everyone was supposed to be racing bikes to its limits the most sold bikes of all times would be a 250. People should buy and ride whatever makes them happy and they can afford.
You said yourself you don't ride your 600 to it's limits. Why don't you get a 250 or 400 then?
It's because this is 'merica. People can buy what they want, when they want, and drive it (or not) how they like.
People do the same with $30,000 cruisers with more chrome and cubic inches than a space shuttle, ride it at 45 mph for two hours, then spend the next 6 hours detailing it.
I've found it's much easier to laugh to myself, crank up the music, and flog my own bike than worry about them. I know I sound or look stupid to other people out there but I just don't care any more.
First track day I went to was on a 475lb 65hp V-Strom with Metzler Tourances. I found myself regularly passing a guy on a Honda liter bike, and was regularly passed by a 13yo on a 250. So I was both pleased with my progress and humbled at the same time. Probably a good place to be.
This is the first or second day in 2010 when helmet mounted cams were still allowed.

Not the hot setup for. Track day use.

There's other reasons to buy a bike with a bigger engine. Some of us want a bike that will last a long time. A larger displacement engine turning at a lower RPM will last longer than a small engine turning at a higher RPM for a given speed. I don't know of too many 600SS engines with over 100,000 miles on them; actually, I can't think of any... Anyone here have one with that many miles?
22000 miles and counting on my 07 ZX6R bought it out of the crate in 09![]()

You said you're talking about squids in your post. When that term comes up, I have the image of the guy riding his bike with a beater, shorts and with the backwards hat on, with a helmet hanging off the side of his chromed out, lowered Busa. If these people tried to give me bike advice, (like, oh you need a 1000)I'd have a nice long laugh. IMO they think they need a 1000 because it's obviously much cooler than having a 600.
When I used to go to bike night in Springfield Ma, I saw rows of Busas, and R1s that were all customized the way I described above. On top of that, they were the ones that would sit at red lights revving the shit out of the engines, and did burnouts until the cops showed up. I highly doubt these guys are getting their rocks off by hitting up the twisties. In fact out of all the rides I've taken into twisty areas, I can't recall ever seeing a "squid" out there. I always see the squids either in groups in the city, rolling by the clubs and bars, or on the highways pulling wheelies or ripping in and out of traffic at 100+mph.
I love my 636, and I've only ever ridden a 1000 on the track once and was really impressed by it, but not enough to ever want one (at least right now). I still haven't totally pushed the limits of my 600. Oh and for them saying you NEED a 1000 to have fun, well I ride my DRZ almost everyday that I'm home, and I have more fun on that little 400 than I do with my 636 on the road.

This is AWESOME!
RPMs at speed is not a reliable indicator for the life of an engine. Piston velocity is a much more accurate indicator, and most modern motorcycle engines are short stroke designs.
But go on, this is fascinating.... What's the highest mileage you have on any of your bikes? Ever?

This forum has a collective disdain for the same types, so I doubt you'll garner any actual insight.
But shit, I wanna join that fb group and have done fun.

I like liter bikes because I am lazy and don't have to shift as much as I would on a 600.. just grip it and rip it..
But what do I know, I ride an 800 parallel twin and soon I'll have a 2fiddy on the street.

It's nothing but a manufactured excuse. They just want more "reasons" to justify buying a bigger bike because they're too insecure to just say "I like it more cuz its faster... Period"
And that's fine enough reason for me. Shit, I'd love a faster bike than my Tuono. Who cares if I "can't use all that power on the street" or all I that crap? People are so judgmental of others and insecure about their own decisions that we have to shit on others who want something other than what we want ourselves and then we come up with reasons for why we DON'T want what we don't have.
"Meeehhhh, I wouldn't ever want an R1 cuz they're stupid and you can't use all that power on the street"
No, you don't want an R1 cuz you can't fucking afford it and you're insecure about your financial status and your "little" 600.

If anything I am glad they exist. They are the best source of money for motorcycle shops And dealers. They are probably the reason every year new models come out. They profit the part and accessory companies more money in one bike that others do in their entire lives. Don't hate just because you don't understand it, the way I see it doesn't affect you at all, don't even think about it.
If its not what I like, I dont like it.
