"Dad! Your motorcycle seat is smoking!"

I pulled my bike out of the garage and parked it in the driveway this morning. The sun was beating down on it pretty good and later also reflecting off a window on the second floor of the garage, onto my seat. The combination of both heated it enough to melt the vinyl to the point that it was smoldering. It's scarred but still intact; hoping it does not rip. Never even considered that as a possibility...

My inlaw's jeep Cherokee has scorch marks across the fabric on the roof. Same thing, parked in the sun with a cd sitting face up in the console. Burnt a couple 4" long tracks across the roof.

So...weird shit can happen, I guess.

Put a double bubble clear windshield on an RC51. Park it in the sun and watch the dashboard melt. Lol happened to quite a few RCs.

GSXR's too. Had the dash replaced under Suzuki coverage. The shop took a heat gun too the dash for an extended period of time and could not repeat the problem. Or even get the plastic soft enough to bend let alone melt through.

Yup. The rolled up end/border around the windshield would magnify the rays/heat, much like the others have said. Apparently it's not all that uncommon on a variety of machines...

The stock FZ1 windscreen also does that. Nice design!

There's a "death ray" hotel in Vegas that concentrates the sun on folks by the pool.

Sun is at solar maximum, cycle-wise, but there are no sunspots, and while the North/South poles of the sun are flipping, the magnetic field of the sun is in a severely reduced state. According to what I can ascertain from the NASA site, cosmic/infrared rays, and the visible rays that do things like heat up the inside of the car, melt things and give you a hell of a sunburn are at their max. That's why things are so hot right now, especially closer to the equator. We're actually at a point where sunspot activity and storms on the sun are lower now (when we're supposed to be approaching solar maximum) than at the bottom of the 11 year cycle at the sun's lowest. They're saying the sun is at it's quietest it's been in over 130 years. The heat generated is releasing lots of methane which is a greenhouse gas on steroids, but also is a great filter for sunlight the more you release. These, according to NASA, are great indicators of an approaching mini-ice age, the kind that come upon up in the space of a few years to a decade. Some of those guys think mini-ice ages can happen in months. Meanwhile? Cover your bike, find some shade, protect the eyeballs for the long trek south in November..

I trust very little that nasa is currently saying. Its budget is almost zero thanks to obamas desire to rid us of its intel, and nasa has been recording information that parrallels the current administrations efforts towards a greeen world in order to collect more of its funding back.

as for this new claim of an ice age, ill be sitting by my snowboard waiting. Don't hold your breath though, its all political. Add this new claim to the global warming of 2000's and the earily similar global cooling from the 1960's.

I had no idea so many bikes had these issues. I imagine a tinted screed takes care of it? Crazy. Thanks for the heads up. Glad your damage wasnt worse!

Re: "Dad! Your motorcycle seat is smoking!"

Yeah...dunno about the ice age, but the sun is provably more intense day-by-day, so any time the bike is out, ya gotta cover it. Another thing I've noticed is even on days the AIR isn't so hot, the pavement is hotter and therefore softer. I found the bike at a 45 degree tilt the other day, the kick stand sunk 3 inches deep in a pretty stout looking asphalt/shell pavement in about 20 minutes' time. Lucky the bike didn't drop. Stuff like that I don't remember until recently. Ya expect that stuff on brutal days, but not average. Doesn't hurt to crack the windows on the cage an inch, either. Ah well, what the hell, my Concours14 will be gone soon, no more 700 lb. loads on the kick..
