so why do the bikes in the paris dakar race look so funky with the fairings and crazy windshields? Why dont you see regular looking dirtbikes like you see in the baja 1000?

They run much longer segments between fuel stops, the fairing hold fuel. There is also an automatic map book holder and 2-3 nav/gps systems.

That bike belongs to a friend of mine (a Frenchman no less), he did the Dakar in 2004 I believe. As a 100% privateer too, the lucky bastard...
