Hands up how many people here didn't already know this? Just interested to know.
If I'm riding alone I usually leave it in gear.

On group rides it alot easier to play grab ass at red lights when it's in neutral

I'm not giving any advice. I'm just asking how many people stop in neutral at an intersection.
Actually, that's not what you asked. You asked...

Not how many do it. Different questions. Different answers.

Pedantics. If you know it, you do it and vice-versa. I asked the same question.

Huge truck just ran over 10 bikes, I'm not sure anything the bikers would have done could have prevented that, especially if you were one of the guys in the front rows, you would have felt pretty safe.

    Really bad obviously.

+1, i keep it in gear untill i have a car or two behind me. just being honest. But you would have to have one hell of a reaction time to get out of the way of a vehicle that makes no attempt to stop. I try to favor the sides of the lane if i can aswell.

Wow, good reminder. I flash my break lights to make sure that person behind sees me and I keep my eyes in mirror till I see him settled. I sometimes put it in neutral to make an adjustment but then it goes right back in first. But I haven't been leaving an emergency out So use to just getting in line. Got to remember that part...ugh, I always forget something.

At first I didn't understand how all those bikes got hit and were under truck till someone said Semi never stopped and then it dawned on me, ahh rear ended. Horrible, simply horrible

Just think "Duffy samich" everytime you come to a stop. You'll remember to stay to the side.

I took the BRC and keep my bike in gear. I will keep an eye behind with more intensity now at stop lights!

Kick the car in your lane once and they'll get the idea.

I guess I'm one of the few who keeps it in gear all the time, and I never took the MSF course.

    could happen to anyone

this honestly made me sick to my stomach. just thinking about being in their situation, stopped at a light just enjoying the day, and then out of nowhere death comes from behind.... so many lives destroyed because the driver was "not paying attention, shuffling through paperwork" it just blows my mind

last season i first in line stopped at a light on Main St. in Nashua, there were a few cars stopped behind me also....i was just waiting for the light to turn green when i suddenly felt my bike nudge forward, i had the front brake lightly engaged so it didn't move too much. i turn my head around and was greeted with a lady in her car giving me the classic "i'm sorry, i can't believe i just did that look." I gave her the most evil stare I could come up with at the moment, but I was just in shock that I was already stopped, as were the cars behind me for 5 to 10 seconds before it happened

i'm assuming she probably just let her foot off of the brake and the car rolled forward as she was looking for something....but still, really? she could have nudged me straight into crossing traffic and gotten me killed.

distractions are a killer, just taught me to be more on guard when on the bike, you really never know when the shits going to hit the fan

Good thing to teach, getting into 1st gear at a stop. But ya have to combine that with keeping an eye on the rear view to make sure some butt-wipe in a cage is really slowing down and you need to have a plan for where you'll bail out to if he doesn't stop. Flashing a little brake light at him to help him see ya doesn't hurt either. And, ya gotta do this stuff at every light, or sooner or later..

Common sense, but it's easy to get sloppy, I guess.

FWIW I'm normally in gear, but if I'm gunna talk to a buddy or adjust something I pop it in N... it isn't really something I "do" or "don't do" even though I know I should.

Christ...you're out with friends, and pow...a huge dump truck takes you out. RIP and prayers for them. I've been practicing/preaching this for years...if I'm last in line, I stop a cars length behind the car in front, angle the bike to the right, stay in gear, and keep my eyes locked on the mirror, watching for whatever is coming up behind me to make sure they stop...watch for them to decrease speed, especially these days..the cell phones, the texting, "shuffling papers", etc people just not focused on driving...if not I'd be outta there! At least I'd have some chance to move out of harms way. Thank God, I've never had to. Too often, I see riders pull up to lights, take their hands off the grips and just sit in line, paying no heed to what's coming up behind. Makes me cringe.

Re: damn, crazy motorcycle accident in arizona

I was in heavy traffic, had to stop fairly quickly because of the car in front of me, and was nearly immediately hit from behind by a Jeep. Thankfully I had the front brake fully applied or I would have gone into the car in front of me. Somehow he just hit my rear tire and didn't cause any damage, and I didn't drop the bike, but I couldn't stop shaking because I know how bad it could have been. I'm still not sure what I could have done differently, because I had a median to my left and a line of cars on my right, with not enough space between lanes to shoot the gap.

One reason why I almost always filter to the front at a red light (if there's only a car or two ahead of me), I don't care if it's a ticket-able offense, at least it puts some serious metal between me and someone approaching the intersection.
