    definition of a squid

What is a squid? must find out if I am one, know some or should be carefull to avoid them - at home, at the bar, in the ocean, on the road or on the track? I just hate to sound so dumb but shit happens.

    http://www.sportbikes.net/forums/fz6...efinition.html

It’s an Acronym, SQUirrely kID: 1. In reference to younger motorcycle riders with little respect to posted speed limit laws, self safety or safety of others. 2. Inexperienced newcomer, someone trying to ride beyond his skill level with arms flailing (like a squid) to try not to fall. This may be just a Southern term. 3. Stupidly Quick, Underdressed, Imminently Dead. 4. Any SportBike Rider -- seems this term got twisted along the way and has many meanings. 5. Sportbike riders who wear tennis shoes or flip flops, shorts, T-shirts, etc. on their nice shiny new sport bikes. 6. Anyone who rides without all proper gear, rides recklessly or rides beyond his limits.

    Re: definition of a squid

there are several claims to the origination of the term

    1. sailors returning from military duty that became motorcyclists
    2. riders with 2stroke bikes that spewed smoke like a squid
    3. riders that rode erraticly like a squid moving thru water

SQUirrely kID is a more recent claim

ALL stunt riding types seem to me immenently qualified to be termed squids.

    Re: definition of a squid

    in more detail.....

Squid is an irresponsible motorcyclist; it is generally associated with a new or reckless motorcyclist seen riding erratically and/or beyond his or her capabilities, often without appropriate riding gear.

The origin of the word is varyingly attributed as:# A contraction of squirreley and kid, or an acronym for "Stupidly Quick, Underdressed, Ignorant and Dangerous" or "Stupidly Quick, Underdressed and Imminently Dead"# Observing a squid underwater, it seems that the creature is unable to change direction while swimming without first coming to a near complete stop. Once the squid does stop and change directions, it can very quickly accelerate back to its regular swimming speed. Beginning motorcyclists (especially sports bike riders) commonly have trouble turning the motorcycle with any substantial amount of speed (causing them to slow down to unnecessarily slow speed to take a turn), while at the same time have a tendency to ride very fast on the straight sections of the road.# Newly-inducted sailors based in San Diego in the '60s would frequently buy an inexpensive 2-stroke moto for transportation while on shore, whether they'd ever ridden before or not. So, you had large numbers of unprotected, inexperienced "marine life", squirting through traffic in a hurry and leaving a trail of black "ink" (smoke) behind them.

Often young, this motorcyclist is identified by their reckless abandon (speeding, wheelies, stoppies etc.) and by their inappropriate attire (Shorts, backwards ball cap, flip flops, Wife Beater T-shirt, etc). Such a rider eschews all or most of the protective gear worn by many riders (helmet, gloves, leather jacket, riding pants, and boots) and the social and legal norms of riding behaviour, and as such is looked upon with derision by experienced motorcyclists, who also refer to them as "organ donors", "Zip-Splats", "Skin Crayons", and "soon-to-be-ex-motorcyclists

SOME chrome is okay but only if you wear enough gear. I have a GSXR (note I don't call it a 'gixxah' or 'gixxah mofo' or anything else like that...) with polished frame, polished aftermarket rims and some chrome.... to be precise the following is chrome: clutch cover, pegs, rider chain block, passenger pegs, kickstand, top half of triple and levers. All actual chrome plated not some stupid sticker.

NO extended swing arm or anything stupid like that. I wear an armored jacket, gloves, full face helmet, riding boots and pants. I have never (thank God) crashed (and I have been riding for years), I look where I am going etc. In other words, I have more chrome then most, but am not a squid.

So I would agree with all the above comments EXCEPT the chrome part... though excessive chrome I might would have to revise for....
