Ducati tech called me today. He's replacing the starter moter, the alternator and the ECU. Said the alternater putting out to much juice which hit the battery. Also said I would make out because he ordered me the performance ECU. Thing is I have a stock pipe still on the bike, Is this guy blowing smoke up my ass? I know the performance ECU has a more agressive fuel/spark/timing map, wouldn't it screw up the bike more by leaving a stock pipe on? I'm confusedI know the upgraded ECU will save me some money if I decide to throw an aftermarket exhaust on (besides Termi's which come with the peformance ECU's). Any comments?

I'd give Ducati a call and ask them. Maybe if you sound concerned enough they'll send you some Termis![]()
at my job we had a customer come in with a 1098s that had the full termi system and he was hell bent on blaming the termi pipes, for the stalling issues. So per his request we installed his stock pipes (kept term ecu as he didn't have original one). And he barely made it out of boston before coming back to get his termi pipes put back on.
Now this is the only 1098 i've ever seen run ecu only, so it could be an isolated issue.

The perf ECU is probably just the replacement ECU that ducati is using on the bikes with the stalling/starting issue. It is being replaced quite regularly on 1098's.
I'd post this on ducati.ms or 1098-forums for an answer from about 500 people with stalling/idle/starting problems with the 1098. Many have had the ECU repaced, but not many needed the alternator/starter. Most have resolved the problems from what I have read.

Good to know that after all these years, Ducati's electrics are still shit.
They should call Production Twins what it really is, Shitty McBikefest. Rules for Participation: If your bike runs lower laptimes than a lawnmower, you are not eligibile for Shitty McBikefest. -Darrell

As I understand it (and I don't all that well) it is a set up issue. The dealers are not setting up the fuel/air/idle/bullshit up right which is causing stalling at idle. I have heard (and I dont know if it is true) that some dealers have had zero stalling problems and some have had lots and lots.
I believe the ECU issue has to do with allowing the bike to restart after multiple stalls and not the stalling itself. Again, this is all from crap Ive read on the duc boards.

Alternator didn't cause the battery issue. It's very likely the battery issue (loose terminal) damaged the alternator though.
As for the ECU, if it is the performance ECU, I believe you will still get an advantage as it will not be tuned for EPA regs. Should take care of any flat spots. As Manny says, it is probably a Ducati recommendation for any bikes with stalling issues.

Sorry pal................" Thanks Kurt"! Actually thanks for having an allen wrench in your tool kit...ha. How firm are you on the June 30th ride? I mean is it set in stone? Saturdays just don't work for me. Check my PM on grouprider. I could try to get the day off if need be but didn't know how set June 30th was.

I was coming back from work the other day and decided to take the long way home from Wellesley Hills. I found a kick-ass set of twisties leaving Natick heading into Medfield wand probably passing through another town. It's a good 20 minutes long. Definetly gotta check it out. It's about 8 minutes away from the center of walpole.

It's fuel injected and they don't make the power commanders yet for them. A performance /race ECU (which he's supposedly installing on my bike) is the same as a power commander I'm told, however the performance ECU can only be mapped by computer (not sure about the power commander).
