what determines if a bike is totalled?

    i went riding with a guy a week ago... 2007 r1
and he was on a bike that he was purchasing from his friend
i flat out told him i would not consider putting a leg over that bike because it didnt seem safe..
i figured it was prob totalled...

there was a 3 inch wide dent in the frame near the tank
2 dents on either side of the tank
    plastics were trashed...
adn both rider and passesnger pegs were all scratched up..

he said the bike passed inspection...
    maybe i dont know enough
but seems to me this bike wouldnt...
it looks like it highsided orrr was low sided on both sides

    thanks for the input..

I don't think I would ever buy anything with frame damage.

He is buying from a "friend"....?

Re: what determines if a bike is totalled?

Passed what inspection? Typically with an insurance company if the frame is dented the bike is done. Its too much money in parts and labor to swap it over combined with the other obvious stuff. I would measure the bike before I made any decision about buying it and Id go through it all to be sure everything was ok. If he really has his heart set on the bike at least try and talk him into bringing it into a real shop to get looked at.

Re: what determines if a bike is totalled?

Yes typically any frame damage equals totaled bike. All the other stuff is just cosmetic, and if what you listed, besides the frame damage, is all that's wrong, it would not be enough to total it. The damage would need to be more than 50% of the value of the bike. I'd tell him to have the frame damage looked at somewhere qualified to see how bad it really is structurally.

Re: what determines if a bike is totalled?

Most likely totaled and needs to be parted out or frame replaced.
I would never ride a bike like that except maybe in the parking lot.

Dent in an aluminium frame = totalled AND unsafe. Aluminium cracks when it dents...

Don't be so judgmental. I'd still ride it without hesitation, a dent in the frame doesn't make a bike unridable by any means.

Let's all take a minute to think about all those race bikes out there. Frame damage? I'd say so on a good number of them.

Re: what determines if a bike is totalled?

99% my bike is called totaled. Only because the 2 pieces of the plastics, muffler, mirror, and seat is enough to be more than what my 2000 cbr is worth. There are scratches on my frame from me vainly trying to get it up off a curb in the wet rain. Those scratches had to be "noted" and I think that that put the nail in the coffin.

I'm waiting to hear from the insurance company what $$ they are going to give me, how much to buy back.... and what I would have to do to get it re-registered.

I'm sure it could be "totalled" for just cosmetic damage alone, but a big dent in the frame, I don't know quite yet how that gets passed an "inspection" but I can let you know as soon as I find out!

Re: what determines if a bike is totalled?

it probably passed the sticker inspection which there no reason it shouldn't. its obviously not the safest thing in the world but if the frame is still straight i'd ride it

IF the previous owner had insurance and made a claim the insurance co would have totalled due to frame damage. ALTHOUGH, you can tell the ins. co. to forget about the frame and fix/write check for stuff they will fix minus the frame

Here's some visuals to go buy. Totaled- my heart is still broken over this- but at least my pelvis healed up nicely! Boy I miss this bike....
