I saw the 848 today at a dealership. My first impressions.
The one I saw was red. The paint sucked. It was orange-peeled.
The front fender sucks
No steering damper sucks
It's only 11lb lighter than a 1098 and not much cheaper for the big bag 'o' horsepower you lose.
Hence my poll.
What poll?
yes 11lbs lighter and 200cc smaller PLUS lower grade suspension AND brakes sucks HARD.
What do you also give up 40bhp and 2g's? (not sure the hard number but I know its close)
It needs to be a lot further away from a 1098 to be a hit, it will still sell..but not as big a hit as it could have ben

I'm sure you all know my opinion on ducati, I'd like to check it out in person and even take it for a ride before making a call.
It's all water under the bridge, and we do enter the next round-robin. Am I wrong?
oooooooooooooo, that poll....you would figure an admin would have the poll and the thread would be posted together![]()

if it's only 2k less, that means it's still 13k?
i'd say if they could get it at 11k or 12k it would be strongly appealing.
i still think they're sexy, and i'm sure it would be plenty of power for me (i thought i recalled seeing a dyno in the 120's rwhp range). bet it's not comfy, though![]()
hurray, strikethrough!

ummmmmm. DAMN!!! I wish I had more of an advanced knowledge of this
Can you make a post count negative?
or a funny number like always 69?
maybe the picture of you and him, but stabbing him with a dildo?
or a pooh bear picture?
a rainbow flag?
I don't know there is to much pressure and I have been drinking since noonish...again
The idea of only letting him post in threads 24 hours old was good![]()

I can think of a bigger mistake. Getting rid of the SS line! What happened to an affordable air cooled Duc you can ride/race without having to break the bank.

I just love the way it looks. Plus it makes me happy when my 636 is looked at as a pussy bike cause I dont have a 1000, but know I can beat the pants off 99% of the people with 1000s on the street. Thus, I like this 848, but would wanna test ride it first
Regardless of it's shortcomings they'll still sell a bunch of them.
If you are prone to joining the Italian motorcycle club you'll love it. It you are a member of the British, UJM, or Milwaulkee motorcycle clubs you'll find reasons to extoll your own tribes offerings.
If decisions like these were made strictly on fact - Price/Performance/Reliability/Servicability - we would all be on a Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki or Kawasaki.
But these decisions....like most...are highly charged emotional choices backed up after the fact with 'selective' justification.
I love the 848...and love even more that we have so many great freekin' choices!

i say no thank you - its a ducati 1098 with a smaller engine, thus the 11lb wght loss. instead of it looking like the completely gorgeous ducati you expect, it had some "cheezyness" to it - i understand the reasoning behind it, it goes in the middleweight class... but there's not a huge group of people that will be able to afford to race it... my biggest thing is, if you have the money for the 848, theres a good chance you can afford the 1098, so at this point, why buy the 848?
+1and love even more that we have so many great freekin' choices!
I would like to see them bring back the SS's though.
Why didn't they just make it an 851 so it would be even more striking just how ridiculous the displacement war has gotten.
Ducati really didn't have much option other than to make the 848 exactly what it is. People clamored for a smaller displacement version of the 1098, and the only way to do that and get the cost down was to lower the spec on some components. It's not like comparing a 600 to a 1000 from other brands, they're two completely different machines. Duc started with the 1098 and effectively de-tuned it to meet customer demand. When you consider the price on the 1098 started artificially low in the US anyways...
WTF DUCATI
all your peers have litre bikes that are 11.5K and thier little bros. are 9K Why the hell are you doing the same thing with the 1098's little bro.? 15K and 13K for the 848
you guys are fooked
+1 Dave
if you want to be part of the masses so be it! if you want to be part of the IMOC (friggn elitist wop wannabes) J/K pay the piper and pay again and again and .......

It is what it is. The 916/748 was the same thing. Ducati's not exactly struggling guys. Whine all you want about how the japanese bikes are better and cheaper. You're not the target market. This model will fill out their model line. They won't over produce it, and they'll make good money on it.
You guys should be happy. You get a better product for less money. For some reason, though, you won't be satisfied for more than a year or two with your product. Something tells me these Ducs will remain unchanged and highly successful both in the dealerships and on the track for a good long while...
heh. this thread is funny. FYI 1098 is 16k in 2008 so the 848 is actually 3k less. I took at 848 up Hwy 84 yesterday, huge smile.
I could reply to every single 'gripe' with logic and reason but I know it's a waste of my time. I am a bit surprised by some of your comments Derek, you are savvier than that...
(will say the Factory fucked up and some bikes didn't get Clear Coated, hence weird paint. The red one sitting in my garage right now has flawless red paint. All the blems will be fixed ASAP)
