Yeah I'm a fan of quality of quantity but that's just me...

If I were you I would be considering the Ducati Hypermotard 796 or Aprilia Dosoduro (sp?) as a second bike.

Not to be disrespectful but isn't that kind of like saying why have a 10 oz Filet Mignon when you can have 3 lbs of ground beef?

Check the local road surfaces first. Maine has a lot of roads in poor condition.

Those are all pretty extreme sport bikes. You are going to miss a lot of riding due to the weather. The Adventure Tour bikes will get used a lot more. For you that means the BMW 1200GS Adventure.

Seeing that I'll be visiting, I would want to see an Aprilia RSV4 waiting for me.

You won't like a sportbike on Maine roads. The economy has been hardest on road maintenance up here.

Hell, even my 2 naked bikes don't get used much anymore due to miserable road conditions.

If your getting the 1199 don't bother with the 848. If you want another Ducati check out the streetfighter. It's a nice riding naked bike with the power of the superbikes.

Doc hate to break the news to you, but there ARE motorcycle enthusiasts out there who would rather have say 2 or 3 really nice bikes than a garage full of Honda Hawks.

You have a nice truck, right? Well why don't you sell it and buy 5 Civics? Wouldn't that make much more sense?
I have a nice bike too... and I have had bikes nicer than any you have owned.

My truck does a job that 5 civics won't handle. My bikes are a hobby that I enjoy. I would rather enjoy 6 bikes that do everything differently than 2 or 3 that do the same thing.

That said, with the amount of money being tossed about on "personal preference" I could have my nice truck 4 nice bikes and still have money left over for trackdays.

Too each his own, far be it from me to tell someone what to do with their money, I was just asking a question.

I do not see the correlation.

I could put you on a bike worth $5000 that you would not be able to lap any faster than you could one of yours listed.

Of course image is everything to some people. Others just want to ride.

You determined that his list consisting of a Ducati, Aprilia, and BMW automatically led you to believe his priority was 'image'? Are you really that presumptuous to assume that his selections were simply based on what others might think of him after making the purchase?

You called out the OP for wanting a top performing, elite bike, however when I came back with a response to your post you come at me with a "I have nicer things than you" argument?

It never ceases to amaze me how you can have such a shallow, childish attitude and expect others to follow your advice on any subject matter.

Everyone wants to simply forget the number of times you've made a complete ass out of yourself on this forum, that is their decision however I feel bad for the new members who don't know any better.

    Re: Ducati, BMW or Aprillia?

I think that twins are easier to ride than I4's or V4's, since I am partial to Aprilia, maybe consider a Vtwin Tuono or RSV? They arent made anymore, you can get a deal on one, they perform like crazy, are reliable, and look the tits.

Food for thought. Welcome to New England!

i didn't mean to start an argument here, i was just getting some opinions, i didn't expect to agree with every one of them, no big deal. The reason i picked the options i did was because they were my personal favorite choices not because i care what everyone thinks, hell i will have a helmet on and i don't know a single person in Maine anyway lol..... thank ALL of you for your opinions, i think for a 2nd bike i may prefer a Monster and if i get another super bike i will be going for the BMW.... just wanted opinions and was hoping to meet some people in the area with similar interests.......... wait maybe i like the Aprillia better lol

    Re: Ducati, BMW or Aprillia?

IMO, If this is going to be a 2nd bike for friends and family to use you should consider a bike with a displacement less than 1K cc to make the power more manageable. Someone metioned a SV650 and tho I have never ridden one I believe that would be a good choice for someone not accustomed to the power of a 1K cc superbike. However, If you were thinking to get some enjoyment from it yourself from time to time it would be a crime to not give consideration to an aprilia Dosoduro 750. It is a V twin so that I-4 rush is not there for a less experianced rider to get themselves into trouble but enough power for yourself to enjoy on those occasions you want something differant to ride. It is a Motard so it could handle so of those roads up north that suddenly turn to dirt. As an owner of a Tuono I can tell you that the quality and reliability of Aprilia bikes are top notch and no...... you wouldn't need to let me ride it. Just my 2 cents to offer. Good luck to ya.

Wow, do you have some kind of ax to grind?

Going this deep into a simple question posed to the op? Really?

I offered another bike to add to his list in my first post, I followed it up with the question why have so few when you can have so many? I see nothing inherently wrong with said question. It is how YOU percieved them that is the issue.
