Yea but you came of as a condescending jerk when you posted. Everyone gets what you're trying to say, we've all heard it. But you sound like a real dink when you tell people that they are about image because they may be able to cut a faster lap time at loudon on a cheaper bike.

for what its worth, i am not offended. I understand what you are saying. But for me, i simply dont think i would get enough use out of a stable of bikes. For me, i would rather have a few bikes that are the best of the best, but i do understand what you are saying, kind of like saying "why buy a Ferrari when there are super corvettes that cost 1/4 as much and will beat me around a track" but again for me, a vette will never have the heritage or simply will never BE a Ferrari. so no hard feelings, and i agree, i would love love love a 1190 RS

There isn't one reason people buy the bikes they do. If you buy the bike you love when someone questions your purchase. 1) you really don't care about there opinion. 2) you can list every reason you bought it. Yes for the money I spent on my 848 evo I could of had a brand new 1000 i4 that has way more performance and tons of features. But To me there completely different bikes and to each his own. If I had the money to buy a brand new pannigale I'd be all over it although id wait a year for them to make sure there wasn't a million recalls on it.

I have a BMW s1000. it's a great bike, a really fast German gsxr with some toys. not a lot of soul. I like soul. I like superbikes. I'm interested in the KTM RC8R, it gets some great reviews and seems to be a little less focused than the current crop of superbikes, kind of like the Aprilia RSVR's that I've got so fond of.

A Hypermotard or something less obvious like a Yamaha FZ6. Either in competent hands can rip or be quite tame for the less avid sport biker.

    Why decide now?

By the Ducati, ride it for 2 weeks and see what works for you. Then buy 1, 2 or 3 more bikes.

Bottom line - if you have the cash by the nice shit!! If you don't have the cash finance the nice shit!!

If you go with the hyper I suggest the 1100. It's a heavy bike and the 796 really is dumbed down. No adjustable nothing and not much weight savings for the decent sized power loss.

I have almost 6k on my hyper. I ride it almost everyday and it has finally sunk in how practical a bike it is for everyday use.

Yet it appears some do care. Even a "mod" is coming in with a personal agenda.

You have said you did not take offense and none was meant. Sorry to get you in the middle, some people are just assholes.

I don't think I've ever heard a single person say they didn't have fun riding an SV. Ever.
That seems like sound advice to me.... You don't need a superbike to have a blast and push the envelope if you're ready. Fewer people will get in trouble on an SV than a liter bike.

So, JW - being from Florida you're probably perplexed that such a simple post could generate such controversy. You have to understand that winter in new england keeps most of us from riding. (RandyO being the notable exception and he's good for controversy year round...) So, we get edgy and easily provoked.

Thought an explanation was in order. Now, GET OFF MY LAWN

May be a good idea to borrow a bike around where you will be living to scout around with. Your list of requirements may change.

Even the best roads around here have gotten pretty miserable.

Multistrada would fit the bill nicely and still keep you on the sexiness.

nah, i get it, people get passionate about what they love! if you start a post on a car forum asking which is better a Ferrari, Lamborghini or Porsche i am sure it would go on for 100 pages lol.... besides, being in NE isn't your lawn DEAD about now?

why a Multistrada? curious why that would be a better choice over a monster or a hyper or both, wouldn't a Multistrada be too much for the friends to ride?

    Re: Ducati, BMW or Aprillia?

Comfort/performance/suspension. You can get the top level one with all the Ohlins goodies on it and set it up for real-world conditions. There is a need to get to the nice roads up here that means you may want something comfortable but still sporty. Bumpy twisties just aren't fun on a supersport, having the leverage of an upright but still all the top tier components would be the ideal combination for New England roads.

One hell of a package they have in that thing. The most comfortable of all the Ducati's and a great all-arounder. Look for the video of the Pike's Peak run from this year on an essentially stock one. Quite impressive.

I wasn't thinking it was a "friends" bike, I was thinking it would be your main. Someone already stated SV650 for a friend ride, I would agree completely. You'll probably end up riding that yourself half the time.

Not too much difference between Hyper and Multi for your friends. Similar riding position and both have great (though different) motors. The Hyper range is a lot less without the extended tank.

However, I predict that, if you had a Multi, that would rapidly become the goto bike for yourself anytime you planned to head out for more than an hour...

...yeah, I'm biased...but not without experience on other Ducs!!!

I don't know about this....I live about 20 mins from Brunswick, and there was tons of good riding in the midcoast area this year, just like every year. Roads in Maine always fluctuate in condition because they are built so poorly. Every few years they get a topcoat and are good for another 2-3 seasons. We just rotate which loops we do based on conditions and what has been resurfaced in the last couple seasons. Occassionaly you hit a shitty road (like anywhere else in this country) but in general the riding for sportbikes is excellent here.

good choice, for a less experienced rider the lower seat & weight of the 796 will be a plus, still a blast to ride. The issue with the Hyper/Dorso or Multi for a less experienced rider will be the seat height, unless they're 6'.
As for the Hyper VS Dorsoduro I'm a biased Hyper owner, but consider the weight difference as well as the use of the bike. While the Dorosduro has more total HP for top end runs your sitting on top of these bikes and 100+mph for more than 2-3 minutes ain't much fun, where the massive torque of the Hyper is useful and addictive on the back roads from 40-90.

Another kick ass option is the KTM 990 SM or SMT:

    just my $0.02
