Angry Unofficial Cager Assholery and Incidents Thread

What's up my riding breathren. I've not yet familiarized myself with the type of air that this site has yet, but after some searching, I didn't see anything similar and thought I'd pitch an idea. I thought it would be cool if we had a vent thread, similar to one I go to on the EX500 forums. Since we're all New Englanders, we would have a good camaraderie and fun discussing the antics of asshole drivers.

Perhaps, if it's in the mods' good favor, and they like this thread, they can sticky it and we can have our own venting. If it's otherwise, and people don't really like this, then we can let the thread die in obscurity. That being said, I will start.

    ------------------------------------------------------

A day ago, I had the pleasure of finding out why one particular lane on a highway was being the slowest. I will most likely upload the clip to Youtube - found yet another person stuck on their goddamn iPhone! So get this, I'm going up route 95, and at around exit 27, it starts getting very congested. The left lane was moving too freaking slow, so I switched over to the one beside, and eventually, the line started moving faster than the left most lane. I couldn't figure out why the slow as mollasses speed was happening, when lo and behold, an ass in a huge SUV, left hand on the wheel, face down and staring at the iPhone that was being hovered with his right hand on the edge of the steering. The gap between him and the next car was a good quarter of a football field. I could not believe this dorkasaurus, so I pulled up to him, gave him the phone down gesture, then yelled, "Dude, put the phone down!!" He looked at me, then the line I was in slowed down, so he went ahead.

Apparently, he didn't get it. My line caught up again and I told him again, "Put the phone DOWN!! That's dangerous!! You're going to cause an accident!" The poor excuse of a human being just put his phone up to his ear as if he was talking and just rode off. I eventually had to get off the highway onto another road, but that was ridiculous. I know he heard me, but went back to being a danger to society like an automaton. Geez.

Yes, futzing with the phone's a bad idea, but

    1/4 football field = 25 yards = 75 feet.
    Traveling at 60MPH = 88F/S
Following the two second rule would mean that the minimum safe distance between the huge SUV and the next car would be (88F/S * 2S = 176F = 58.6 yards or) a little over half a football field.

I know when I drive my F250 I try to provide a safe distance between me and the car in front of me. It doesn't stop like a sports bike and I promise you don't want 2 tons of it running into your car / bike. The fact that people commonly travel at unsafe distances doesn't necessarily make this guy a dorkasaurus.

I like the idea of the thread in general, especially if many people have interesting videos... but the event you're describing... 'you ain't see nothing yet'.

I don't think they were doing speed limit.

Even if they were going half of the speed limit the math still works with what the OP said.

    30MPH = ~44f/s

    44f/s * 2s = 88 feet = 29.34 yards

I don't know why there is such a debate about speed. The traffic was bumper to bumper. At most we were riding at 15 miles an hour, 20 in some places. I was trying to point out a fact that this guy was holding up people because he couldn't unglue himself from the phone, and that him leaving a quarter football field's length before the other car does not equal the permission to do what he was doing.

I don't get how maintaining a gap is really holding anyone up in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

This kind of sounds like waiting in a line at a theme park, and leaving a 5 person gap in front of you when there's 100 people in line. Who cares? It will not impact the time it takes for you to get on the ride.

Re: Unofficial Cager Assholery and Incidents Thread

Actually, leaving a gap when you're in heavy traffic often helps the flow of traffic. When it slows down in front of you, that gap allows you to keep moving instead of having a line of idiots all 5 feet from each other and having them slam on the brakes.

I'm not defending the jackass for burying his nose in his phone, but people on each others' asses do no good either.

As for the thread in general, I don't know that I see the need for a stickied venting thread. People do just fine at creating their own bitch threads.

    You guys are unreal.

We've all been there; traffic crawling along and one guy is giving a MUCH larger distance than is required. Everybody sits there and goes "WTF doode" and wishes they'd get the fuck on with it so we could all get on with our day.

    Or maybe it's just me.

This happened to me twice today. Yes I get rage when everyone flies by and cuts on over, yet I'm stuck behind him watching as I get further and further behind. If you want to be a sunday driver at least go to the slow lane....even two buses went by to cut him off!

    Cool story Bra!

I was out on a little ride today when I saw a bike on my side of the road in the breakdown lane and I'll be damned if the guy wasn't pushing it up an incline!
I pull up to him said hello what's wrong, out of gas! I can fix that! He says I'm the first one to stop for him. I passed at least 10 bikes going the other way before I reached him.
He told me was waving at each one WITH A BOTTLE trying to signal "Assistance is required"! No one else stopped... Not even the cop that drove past!
I motored up the road to a quick N' shit. Bought a bottle of gatorade and a water. Emptied the gatorade, rinsed with water, dried the best I could and filled it with .183 Gallons of gas.
Motored on back and glug glug vroom vroom as 2 more hardly motorcyclists rode blissfully past.

The kid pulled out his wallet I said put that away, "Pay it forward" I says.

The bike was a little 250 chopper he had made (I guess). Good looking! No signals, no speedo, no petcock... Heh, petcock!

I can't believe how many riders did not stop. Yeah it was a busy road and it would have been a pain to bang a u-turn but for fuck sakes! A brother biker is in peril! Show a little backbone will ya?

I pulled over last year for a Sportster broken down on 93 S in NH. Battery was dead. I offered to jump start him (I carry the Yuasa jumper cables on the V-Strom) but he'd already called the dealer to pick it up - second time it had killed the battery in 350 miles.

It was during Bike Week. I was the first to stop. Literally 100 other HD's rode by while I was there.

Free advice, worth every penny you paid for it: If you don't stop being distracted by what others are doing and focus 100% of your attention on riding, you are going to end up crashing.

I am not surprised by any lack of sympathy, but that's b/c I started riding when I lived in Miami. When i low-sided on a highway on-ramp, the one car that stopped wanted directions to a club.

Garandman is right on regarding distractions.
Don't allow yourself to get so caught up in somebody else's inattention, otherwise you'll lose sight of everything else you need to focus on.

It's not just that. People here are focusing on the fact that because it was traffic, that it didn't matter. That's not what I was bringing attention to. I pointed out that it was because he was on the phone and his eyes were glued to it, so he deliberately drove slow so as to not have to pay any attention. Come on, for those of who live in MA - we should know better than anyone how yielding Massholes are

HAHAHAHA, I've only been on the road for something like 3 months, but I don't yet feel comfortable lane splitting. My boyfriend showed me so many videos of people just plain out opening their doors on you on purpose, or suddenly jerking their car at you when they see you coming, that I really didn't want to do that until I am absolutely confident in my skills. I only lane split if I'm really impatient and only when cars are stopped. Called me a scaredy cat/pussy, whatever makes you feel better, but better be safe than sorry. However, I do dream of a day when I can ride with my fingers in the air, haha!
