Just looking for information. Say you were going to buy a used Ducati in the 5-10 grand range.
What would it be?

Depends on the kind of riding you want to do. If I lived in Twistysville, NH and riding recreationally I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Sbk. For everything else, a Monster.
Personally, I traded in a M900 and a 944SSie against a 1098 and haven't looked back.
I've always like the 900SS, but it has its shortfalls. Probably find a decent older 916, liked those as well.
999 or 749....all day long.
A man of many names...Jay, Gennaro, Gerry, etc.
I have a Tuono so i'm looking at more of the Superbike type then the Monster.
a used 848 or 1098 can be bought all day for under 10gs or a mint 998 would be nice
I have a friend selling an 916 with a big bore kit. The whole bike was redone over the last few years. He only road it this past summer.
replated bolts, powder coated frame, mag wheels etc. The bike is super clean.
If you want more in for let me know. I need to get some pics of it and post it for real for him.

How 'bout an upright all day ride that handles the twisties, has a superbike engine, and can accomodate hard bags and dirt roads with aplomb.
That would be a Multi...but, guessing the aesthetics don't float your boat!

So we've narrowed it to a Sbk then? Minty 749R or if you're lucky, find an 848. No need for anything larger on the street.
Thanks Dave, not a bad idea.
I might be talking to Jim at Seacoast about a Multi to replace my 08 Connie 14. My wife and I sat on one and I really like it. The looks too.
I always wanted a Ducati and a nice minty Superbike to ride would not suck. I just can't ride one for too long as I'm getting to not like uncomfortable after a bit. 51 will do that to a guy
Me personally, a 998, because I love those, and I've already got a Monster.
For sport/track work, you can't beat a good 999 for the money. A 749 is also fun. I'd actually stay away from the R versions; they add a small amount of performance for a large amount of finickyness.
For over-the-road fun, a Multi or a HyperMotard is a good choice. For a versatile general purpose bike, the Monsters are great. The S2R1000 is about the best Monster, IMO, although if you want to go faster, the S4Rs is a top choice.

I know the 916/998s are legendary, but I personally could never figure out why. The body styling - which might have been revolutionary back in the day when I was in middle school - looks very dated by today's standards and the motor/suspension just doesn't cut it anymore compared to what the same money can buy.
As has already been suggested, for your price range, I'd recommend a 749/999. It has divisive looks, but there is real purity of design and it is (don't quote me) the most decorated race winner in Ducati's history. Added bonus - they are ungodly uncomfortable so if you get used to riding one, any other Ducati SBK will seem more comfortable to you when its time to upgrade!

One of the Sport Classics, probably the Sport 1000.

he is possibly referring to the slightly different valves when it comes to adjusting. the standard version vs R has a different collet system and valve diameter, not really a big deal though.
with that said, i'll throw in another vote for a 749/999 series if you are considering sbks. i absolutely loved mine, the only reason i traded was because of where i moved to. god they are gorgeous bikes. oh, and if you do get one, get the termi can (expensive), its totally worth it. you'll get a woody. every time.

i would still suggest a monster. an S4R or something will give you the kick in the ass you want but be more comfortable than riding a SBK. why buy something that you can only stand to be on for a little while?

For 10k I would buy the 99 Ducati 750SS (approx 3K) listed on here and use the leftover money to get a brand new KTM 200 XC-W or a new leftover Husqvarna WR 300 and a trailer.

A lot of them do seem to be going for ridiculously inflated prices though. I could have gotten a new one for under $10k a while back.
