Just wondering...picked up a 94 a few months ago...doing some mods over the winter . Sooooo...
Pin the frame!
I see you have one of each...sweet...here's the question...Gen 1 or Gen 2 ?
Bought mine for 2 up-ing with the wife , still have the RC51 for my alone time . Going for the visual mods , ghost flamed paint job , cop's , turn signals , corbin seat , avons . Nothing in the way of crazy performance...there's more than enough now , but you already know that...
Have you been here...?
http://www.vmaxforum.net/
Yep, vmaxforum.net is the very best tech-help source for all things Gen-1. (I'm "VMAX_X-14" over there.)
http://www.starvmax.com/ is the goto place for the Gen-2 (if you haven't been there). There's a few threads on the Gen-1 since many of the Gen-2
owners are Gen-1 old-timers who have chosen to keep their Gen-1s.
The question has been asked over there more than once: Gen-1 or Gen-2?
The response has been: If you haven't had a Gen-1, you need to experience it. They don't cost a lot of money and most are well maintained.
And then, if you get the disease, the "sickness for the quickness", you can move up to the bigger fix.
I find it interesting that when my son and I are out on a run (he on my X-14),
the old VMAX attracts more attention.

Current Rides:
08 Ninja ZX-14
02 VMAX 1200
10 VMAX ZR-1700 (Factory closed course competition ECU)
05 ZX-6R (636) (The modified trackday scooter, but still registered for the street)
The Gen 2 is definately an aquired taste...I like the improvements and the ' next-step ' looks but the Gen 1 is ageless...obviously . Also good to see another V Max rider in our age bracket...' still crazy after all these years ' . Maybe we'll get a chance to ride together next summer...a few years ago a bunch of guys from this forum got together on RC51's , we ended up with 13 or so , possibly Half Squid or Bruce might have that picture... maybe do the same thing with the Max's ( there's 5 or 6 on the VMax forum that are close enough ) .![]()
There's a guy in Hamilton has one I see every now and then. They're beastly as long as you don't get too cute trying to use all the power on the street. Yamaha's answer to the V-65 Magna and Sabre. Talk about taking a sledgehammer to a fly. Well, the V-65's were hardly flies, but you get the picture.
Out of the crate the Sabre was a good competitor to the VMax in a drag race (The magna was actually credited in the Guinness book of records as the fastest production motorcycle in the quarter mile for a few years despite having milder cams than the Sabre...) and the Sabre definitely had the edge on handling. Dave Dodge built some scary fast motors back in the day too.
But, when you compare a couple year production run to the VMax's 20+ years, it's easy to see why people forget that it wasn't the better performer when it came out. : )
Not to mention that those magnas were probably the ugliest motorcycles ever built. My pops has on, I shudder every time I see it.
The vmax will power wheelie. Just saying.

It looks the same to me, the Madura. So yeah, its gross too.
Josh, I have yet to twist the grip of my dad's...I'll bet it does, but I didn't wanna say so without experiencing it first. Call me crazy, but I don't think the sabre's as bad at all.

The Sabre isn't ugly, but it also really wasn't a standout either. At least the VMax was distinctive, the Sabre was an early 80's UJM with a neat motor but otherwise pretty bland.
Mine was originally the Silver/Blue scheme but the clearcoat had failed so I decided to dress it up. In hind sight I should have gone with the two tone scheme I mocked up to dress it up another notch...
Some days I still miss that bike, the motor was beautiful, and it handled two up duty without breaking a sweat. On the other hand I was sick of chasing random electrical faults and finding some parts was getting difficult and once I got my ST3 it almost never got used.
hey old timer, good to see you over here. if you need any help over the winter don't be afraid to shoot me a message or give me a call... the sickness of modding these bikes so they can handle and move like a bike thats 20 years newer never stops!

The best advice I’ve ever been given is to not forget where you came from.
