    must you remind me?

if it's a yamaha i leave it alone.

i think i'd attemtp to find the owner first if im not in hurry. that way he wouldn't think you did it even if you did knock it down.

    Ethical Question Posed...

I would be inclined to pick it up....BUT

Years ago in college I saw a jeep wrangler soft top with headlights on in front of my school while was standing out there. I saw it had a student sticker on it. Standing in front of the jeep for about 10 min (this was on street at NU), I said F it I'll shut off this guy's lights his battery is obviously going to die.

So then the guy who owns the jeep, who happens to be in my class either saw me doing this or I told him after figuring out it was his (I forget which it was so long ago), ends up telling me his radio was stolen. Theives probably hit lights by mistake when in the truck perhaps? Either way this kid basically thought if I didn't steal his radio I was involved somehow.

That small life lesson leaves me thinking keeping the bike on the ground is what I'd do, it's not going to get any more dinged up by leaving it there (save for leaking gas and a lit cigarette tossed out of a car!)

No more Mayberry-stayle samaritan antics for me.

There are good samaritan laws. The Red Cross and/or the ACLU I believe will help you.

However I doubt they would care at all if it's over picking up a downed bike or turning someone's headlights off.

Helping a badly injured downed biker? Probably totally different.

    Ethical Question Posed...

    I don't know.

I'm actually not current on CPR and first aid so I'm not that confident that I'd do the job correctly if I came across someone badly injured.

But if someone needed help and did not refuse help I would try to help them. If they decided to sue me later so be it.

I should make that my new year's resolution, go retake CPR & First aid classes.

Kham if I wasn't clear I meant if I saw an injured rider I would be *much* more likely to help. If I leave a downed bike on the ground no one gets hurt. What I meant is good samaritan laws probably wouldn't help you if it was just over a bike.

I would leave it down. I don't want anyone to think I dropped it and am trying to pick it up again. Besides the damage has been done already, why take that risk.

I would find the owner and let him pick it up (offer my assistance). Why hassle with all the other problems. Picking it up so it can fall again probably making more damage, doesn’t make much sense in all respect. It might also spoil a possible insurance claim.

If it was my bike, I’d rather they just update me in a pleasant way. If someone offered to help me pick it up; well then, I am in his or her debt.

Feeling the tone from all of the replies, it’s nice to see and sense from everyone. However, still would inform the owner for monetary and prevention reasons. It is nice to know that people want to do well for their fellow man – thumbs up.
