Really depends on the bike. My YZF600R had a massively heavy exhaust - just the midpipe and can weighed roughly 30 pounds. The slipon with midpipe was less than 12. FWIW, the YZF was the same as the 97 model year, so not sure if that falls into what you consider an older bike or not.
The comment was purposely vague because there are always exceptions as it really does depend on the bike and while I agree that the OEM can is heavy on that YZF the neighborhood of 30lbs is not likely. The entire exhaust system? Sure. The can and mid pipe alone? No.
If your bike has some mileage like over 15,000 your stock shock is gone and the forks need a complete service

my exhaust cost $135 so that doesn't mean much as far as being a bummer.
The k6 1000 is close to the bikes now so i need some add-ons to be that much closer. Basically............. I just don't want to spend the $$$ on a newer bike.

slip on muffler, hi flow air filter and fuel management are usually good for about 10% gain maybe 15% with a full system

Much close to the newer bikes? 05-06 was one of the greatest gsxr 1000s ever made. There's very few newer bikes that can compare to it. You have one of the best motors Suzuki ever made.
Way back when .., every time I pulled my stock pipe to run my D&D full system ..... I dropped a second off my lap times at Loudon .
The motor deff. spun up a little quicker , the throttle response was a little better .. But the biggest change was , that the rear didn't wag as much coming out of the bumpy corners !!!! The stock can was such a anchor !!!!!

Unless you are racing, or will reap the actual benefits of a few more horses, it's a massive waste of money. You'd be better off losing a few pounds and reaping the horsepower benefits.
Playing Devil's advocate, we all spend money on things we don't really need to replace on our motorcycles, so to each his own. If it makes you happy, and you have money to spend, do it.
It's very well known marchesinis make you much fast...

Instead of exhaust, have you thought about rims and a 520 chain/sprocket conversion? So much less rotational weight to spin up...
And you never answered my question: Is your rear shock factory installed?
Marchensi's are worth more.

Check muzzys website they were closing out some full systems for the mid 2k gsxrs. Idk if they still have any but the savings was retardulous. That said you'll probably gain just as much if you just gut the cats and get rid of any exhaust servo flappers that you may have. I have full muzzy system on my 95 6r and its amazing. That said if it didn't come with the bikes I never would have got it. Hell I put a used Leo Vince slip on on my 09 be cause it was 150 on flea bay. But the same goes there. I would never pay for a new one. Not worth it IMO. You will get wau more performance from just changing your sprockets

The -1 in front made a nice feel for you Im sure. Its a good, cheap way to improve. Now I think a 520 conversion, which is MUCH lighter than your stock 530 or possibly 525 pitch chain and sprockets will also be something you can feel. Since we are talking major dollars spent on a full exhaust, which would add 5%, maybe a bit more...it would be worth considering. Especially if your chain is the original one, which Im betting it is.
Now, for the real part I asked the shock question. Dont take offence, its just my opinion derived over many sportbikes (too many modifications to even think about!) and through some pretty hard and FAST riding. Here we go... I think the stock rear shock isnt even good for a paperweight. If you consider yourself a fast rider, which Im assuming (I dont know you and have not ridden with you) by your quest to 'keep up with' the newer bikes, then you very first mod should be an aftermarket rear shock. Wait, dont scoff this off or discount what Im saying..not yet. A rear shock upgrade is a more valuable upgrade than exhaust. I know, I know, we all change exhaust first off...I have always changed exhaust...always. But, since this thread was a question to attain more 'power' or be faster/keep up with newer bikes, I promise, if you rode with a Penske or Ohlins rear shock, you too would be amazed and NEVER settle for a stock rear shock. Just trust me. I even go so far as to say its quite possibly the BEST bang for the buck a bike can have. Once I discovered a shock upgrade could feel like it does, power meant much less to me. I mean, check me out...Im on a little 848 after having numerous 1000cc bikes. Now, its about the turning feel of the bike....under power! Coast thru a corner??? LOL, nope. Keep up with mt buddies on modern literbikes...no sweat. When I had my last GSXR, a 750, up to 120mph I was pretty even with the R1 and CBR1k of my 2 riding buddies. Once we hit anything other than straight highways, Im gone...so far ahead they would be pissed. I swear Im NOT a better or more skilled rider than they, its just the equiptment was better. Is a GSXR better than an R1 or CBR? Nope. But my Penske shock was better then their stock shocks. I had much more feel and confidence.
Now, Ive read in some other forums people stating if you change your exhaust and add carbon fiber, etc BEFORE you upgrade your shock, then youre a squid. I, personally dont say those things, but I do believe its a much better upgrade than an exhaust system.
Just some food for thought. You seem a reasonable person, so I figured I could toss this out at you for consideration. Also, Im betting I will have a bunch here agreeing with me...![]()
