I have two year old Pilot Powers (build date) and the rear tire has cracks inside the groves... The front is still good.. No cracks, etc... I wont be buying another set of these because of this but is it okay to buy another brand tire for just the rear now or should I replace both at the same time.... Any recommendations?..
Build date has zero to do with cracks. It's all about environment.
As long as you replace a radial with a radial you will be fine.

The picture is of the smaller ones... I couldn't get the camera to work on the deeper ones.
Just replacing one tire is fine - i do my rear every year, front every two years.
Those cracks won't effect performance of the tire. Michelin has talked about this, as it can happen to any tire.
BUT - it's in your head. And that stuff does get into mine. I would replace it.

I replace mine in pairs, only because the front is usually scalloped when the rear is worn. If it's still good, run it!
i have to replace my rear every year. how many miles are on that tire and what size is it?
ive run different brands at the same time as well, no ill effect

just go with another of the same tire. its a VERY popular tire and that is VERY uncommon. 2 years actually isn't that old.
they are just surface cracks, not an issue. but if its a mental thing and you really want to replace it, give us a call at Boston moto we are a Michelin dealer. we also can get pirelli and conti street rubber if you want to try something new

No doubt, I would replace it too. Also I just put a different rear on my bike until I can get the front put on this week and no Big Deal as long as your front is still serviceable in the first place. As to the cracks I wish I could find a picture of the RD350 tire I had, the bike was well-stored and in great shape and all but it was 10 years old when I got it in '85 and pretty sure it was on the original rubber.
When I got it home I had to immediately budget for new rubber because little red bugs were coming out of the cracks, LOL.... I don't think they were the performance-enhancing bugs either. I mean THAT would have been okay, right.

Listen to K One. He's the michelin guy.
Whatever you choose to do will be fine. Cracks happen, they don't effect the tire. But if it makes you feel better than swap it.

I had them on my michelins, called it in, and they gave me a partial refund. Can't remember the details. They got me to give them the build date, a picture, and the dimensions. Asked me to contact a local shop, what they told me is they would get the refund since they are a dealer. I paid somewhere around $100 for the mount/dismount of a new tire and that's it.. I have no idea what the dealer got back in return.
