Some guy in NY wanted my RD's real bad. So I traded him.. Both RD's for a '97 GS500 all set up for track days... well sort of.
It has all the good stuff, I conferred with Kurlon before the purchase. It has Keihin CV Smooth bore carbs, a full Yoshi exhaust, after market rear sets, braided stainless lines, track plastics and allegedly engine work to match the good stuff. Here's my issue, Wiring, I can get it to run, but the wiring harness was hacked and spliced etc. I am working through it. Can someone explain to me how the started button works? Should power be getting to it to send to the solenoid OR??? Here's the diagram and I can't for the life of me see how it works. I understand most things but this has me stumped. I wont get back to it until next Wednesday...

Here are some pics of the beast...
Awesome! See ya out there.
A man of many names...Jay, Gennaro, Gerry, etc.
The starter button gets power from the kill switch. When the kill switch is on you should have power on the orange and white wire coming out of the switch, and the coils. This line also feeds the TCI box and starter button. When you press the starter button that sends juice down the yellow/green line, through the clutch safety switch if still present, to the starter relay.
The kill switch gets fed via the orange/blue wire, which goes to the sidestand relay if still present.
The relay has it's own power feed, a black/white line that it uses to drive the starter motor when triggered by the starter button.
So, things to check if chasing the starter:
kill switch
starter button
sidestand switch
sidestand relay
diode
clutch switch
starter solenoid
neutral switch
I'll see if I can reduce the diagram down to a race only minimalist setup for you. You can defeat the sidestand and clutch switches by shorting them out with a jumper at their connectors and the OEM harness will assume you've always got the clutch in, sidestand up so you can start it at any time.
Josh,
I must not be getting power up to there.... Although With the key on I can jump the solenoid to get it to start/run.
I would appreciate a minimalist diagram.. thanks
Doug
Congrats and good luck Sheppo! Lemme know if ya need a hand with that.
Oh and when you do get that thing running, you'll never use all that power!![]()
Doug, I know you're a smart dude and all but I must ask, have you checked the contacts and wire connections inside the starter button?
Ok, so if it'll run that way that rules out the kill switch, ignition switch, solenoid... there is power to the coils, so this has got to be a safety. If it'll stay running when you put it in gear that clears the sidestand safety gunk.
Does the neutral light work?
Do you have a meter or test light? If so, key on, in neutral see if you get voltage at the yellow/green wire coming out of the right hand switch cluster.
see just talking to some one I got it figured out somewhat. I'll let you know next week. (when I have the time to work on it ) I do have a Neutral light. I am sure it has to do with the hacked wiring not the connections Bergs I've been over those. I now see how the power gets into the kill switch starter button and I can't honestly say if the bike is wired correctly in that area OR if the Side stand relay is borked... I am sure it's not rocket science I just needed to talk it out a little bit. Thanks.
Fair enough. I had to ask when you mentioned that it worked after jumping the solenoid because I experienced a button contact issue with a bike and saw the same results after jumping the solenoid.
Best of luck on getting that thing sorted
Thanks for talking me through this. I spend yesterday getting rid of un-needed wires and straightening out what someone with no knowledge of how to read a wiring schematic started. It's pretty well sorted out now. I need to change the oil, put on new rubber and sign up for a track day.
Thanks, Josh, Joel and Paul. Oh Rossco, I used all the power( in 1st gear )
Awwww yeah!
