One of my best friends cousin Matt struck a deer at 40mph around Veterans day last week on his GSX-R.
Hes at Maine Medical and has not yet awoken from his coma. The entire right side of his body is crushed with several ruptured organs including his pancreas, liver and lungs with spinal cord damage (although not paralyzed from what Dr's can see).
So for those who care to say a short prayer for him, those close would appreciate it. For those still out riding this season, PLEASE be careful, these deer are running from hunters in the woods and they really do come out of no where... its a battle you're not gonna win if you collide!
Our thoughts are with him, Chris...
That being said, I'd just like to point out that in NH at least, when you see a 'CAUTION DEER CROSSING' sign, it's there for a reason. I forget the formula they use (Randy?), but they put 'em there when there's a high incident of deer in that area. Pay attention to those signs, especially in areas where subdivisions have gone in, in say the last 5 years or so...
Did you grit your teeth and try to look like Clint Fuckin' Eastwood?
Or did you lisp it all hangfisted like a fuckin' flower?
Thanks Jay.... and yes.. the signs are there for a reason.. same as 'Moose Crossing' It's important to keep in mind that especially this time of year, as the ground cools, we lose a lot of that warm tire traction we use for braking and cornering in the wamer months to navigate around these critters!
I had a deer jump on me last night. It scares the shit out of you. It was the second time in about 3 years. I had the nose of the bike just this side of locked up and the rear sliding. I could have reached over and touched her. Becareful they move in the AM and then about commute time in the PM. This was 6:15 last night.
My thoughts are with your friend!
Damn, sorry to hear about this... Hope he recovers to ride again soon!

I hit a deer head on last year on my old bike at 40mph wearing no gear but an old full face helmet, a pair of cargo pants, and 2 sweatshirts....full squid status (you will never see me on a bike that way again)
Walked away with rash....but walked away.
Makes me realize how lucky and how dumb I was.
He's in my thoughts, wish a speedy and full recovery, deer are no joke.
A man of many names...Jay, Gennaro, Gerry, etc.
133 in Georgetown and Boxford is a bad area as well. Carla has had few deer in less than a month jump in front of her car. One of them lost to the Saab in front of her.
Be careful out there!

I can resist everything but Pete's mom.
That's horrible, I'm sorry to hear that.
I hope he is doing better soon.
sorry to hear about your friend...
I was just thinking about this the other day when I was coming home and I saw a couple hunters heading into the woods on some of the back roads I travel in Berlin, Ma .
I've also had a few jump in front of me in the last 2 years I’ve been riding but never close enough that I needed to lock up the brakes like Sheppo to avoid them and it still scared the crap out of me.
I'll keep him in my thoughts for sure

KAWASAKI RULES WOOOOO!
Very similar experience here last week. It was nice so I rode to work every day. Leaving Bedford, I jumped on Route 3 south from the 62 ramp. Right at the apex of the ramp on the right hand side was a big mutha deer, right on the edge of the shoulder. Maybe 15 feet from me. Just standing there.. 4:15 PM or so.
Prayers to the rider.
no bikes currently
Harsh man. I'll be keeping him in my prayers. Keep us updated!
I was driving close to my home yesterday in my truck. This is in a city! A deer shot out from the side of the road between some houses so freaking fast that it was like I caught one frame in my eyes of this deer literally 2 feet from my front bumper, lit up from my headlights. I actually covered my face with my arms as i went for the brakes. He was gone before I even got to the pedal. I have NO IDEA how I didn't hit her and she was a big fucker too.
No warning, just BOOM she was there. Be careful out there.
Thoughts are with Matt and his family/friends right now.
if a deer jumps in front of me im gonna punch it in the eye on my way down.
seriously though, thanks for the reminder, im not the praying sort but ill cross some fingers for him.
nine times out of ten its an electric razor, but...every once in a while...its a dildo. of course its company policy never to imply ownership in the event of a dildo, we have to use the indefinite article "a" dildo ...and not..."your"...dildo...
Thanks for the thoughts. Just heard from my friend:
I'm no medic so I'll do my best to explain.... Apparently being on a breathing machine for extended periods of time poses a threat for pneumonia... Today is day 8, and they want to take him off but can't, doctors are unable to determine where the blood is draining from his lung so it continues to bleed, his body is failing to recycle red blood cells so hes unable to fight any infection (my guess is he is in a sterile room), they have taken him off of the total sedation so hes in and out of consciousness, apparently tied down to avoid a violent reaction should he suddenly wake up etc etc.
I'm sure anyone who's been though something similar knows more about this kind of stuff. I'm blessed in the sense that in all of the illnesses and accidents I've been through, seen and witnessed, I've never been close enough to someone to see them like this. I can't begin to imagine what this is like for family... then the reality of 'Wow.. this could be my family looking over me with all these tubes, and doctors not willing to commit to 'He's going to be okay'.
Kind of makes me think twice before twisting that throttle around a blind corner next time. :-(
Thanks all again for the support. :-)
I will keep him in my thoughts and prayers.
he is tied down becuase most times when you wake up you will fight the breathing tube, as it forces u to breath it can be very uncomfortable. Hope he has a speedy recovery and god bless his family and watch over him. He sounds like a fighter! One of the best things you and his family can do is constantly remind him that you are there. My friend was in a massive accident, and even after he woke up from his coma, he can remember peoples prescence.. God bless.

as someone who has spent weeks/months in a hospital bed, Sporty is right, having people around is a huge deal. Nothing more scary or lonely than being banged up badly and sitting alone for a long time.
hope he gets better. deer are bad news.

Hope he comes out ok, Dood. Man, that's a lotta damage. Was here to Va last week, saw a hell of a lot of deer down there and on the way back, but no close ones. They're killin' deer in an organized fashion down there trying to thin out the herds because the insurance companies are fed up.
They killin the filthy critters up here? Not hunting, but kills?
