Whilst scouting for weather/road conditions for this evening's romantic ride, I had an interesting encounter with one of mother natures finest.
You know when you're driving in a car, and you see bird fly right at you, it sort of zips right by at a close angle? The whole time it never seems to have to stray too far off its course, as it passes over you in a blur. I was lucky enough to meet that bird's retarded cousin.
I'm coming out of a slow turn and started to give the bike a little mustard. Just as I get going up to somewhere between 30 and 40 I see this bird fly out of a bush, but not really going in any particular direction. Before I knew it the bird came right over my headlight and smashed me square in the chest. Needless to say I was pretty shocked. As I finish processing what I had just happened I look back to see the bird fly off. Little bastard was aok! I started laughing and continued on my merry way.
Thinking back to other peoples stories of birds dislocating knees from highway-speed hits I was pretty lucky to come out of this with nothing more than a funny story. Thanks handi-bird!

you shoulda flipped it the bird
I know a guy who got hit by a bird three times on his bike. I always thought it was a rare occurance. Before I read your post he was the only person I had ever heard of getting hit by a bird. Lucky you are alright, and this is a funny story to tell people.

i took out a chipmunk unintentionally (in fact, i tried to avoid him but he turned around). me and some friends were riding at spirited pace, and a chipmunk darted across the road in front of me. i turned pretty hard, and some him just barely miss my front tire, and right as he was leaving my range of vision, i saw him turn around and i was like "nooooooooooo"
we stopped a few min later, and my friend (i think it was rich, might've been dan though...) was like "yo man, you almost hit me with that dead chipmunk you kicked up with your rear wheel..."

My buddy flushed a bird out of a hedgerow with his GS and it hit his upper arm. he had a deep bruise that hurt for over a month.
I had 2 turkey vultures take off out of the right gutter right in front of me. Scared the hell out of me...they're HUGE and UGLY!

The same thing happened to me the other day, except I wasn't on the bike, I was on an escalator... oh, and it wasn't a bird, it was one of those pretzeldogs (hot dog wrapped in a pretzel w/ mustard.)

I always ride at the back of our little packs on group rides, and out west the bikes up front always stir birds up from the brush on the side of the road, Ive only taken one in the shoulder, but there have been some extremely close calls as well.
i took a duck to the chest at about 20mph. it was a glancing blow but still almost took me off the bike.
i ran over a desert iguana out in AZ at about 120. guys behind me got a kick out of it. my rear tire flung the lizard up in the air and my roomate passed by it while it was at shoulder level. said he looked over an there was a lizard flying by his face.
I almost clipped a squirrel last night on the way to Chester VT.
Strange beast, runs out and stops, has a look see, does a 180 at the last possible second and zips into the weeds. I don't know how close he was to the Michelins but I did avoid him.
you are lucky you didn't catch the bird flew
Not sure what is up with Robins this season, but they're all over the friggin place. I was ducking them, swerving and still had 3 almost fly into me. friend and I split off at the end of the ride and on my way home another robin crosses straight across the road in front of me, then I feel something hit my boot. lil bassard must have either did a 180 and hit me or turned 90 degrees and hit me, at about 55mph.
they're suicidal this year. wonder why
I took a bird to the chest at 70 that just about knocked the wind out of me. I actually had to stop and shake it off.

My old man rode for 40 years. One day about 10 years ago he hit his first bird ever on the way out to Marcus Dairy. He hit another one just as he got there and hit a 3rd one on the way home. (3 IN 1 DAY!!) Never hit another bird again!
