Trying to plan for my trip a bit and am wondering if there is any way to transfer data from an ipad to the 550 for routes.
Was thinking of not bringing a laptop along so I thought this could be an option. Any info appreciated.

Ipad? So like google maps? Or garmin files stored locally on the ipad?
Effectively swapping between google maps and garmin GPSes is one of those technical things in this world that still escapes me.
Either way, I think the answer is no. The ipad doesn't act like a USB host, only a device like the garmin itself. So you are connecting device <-> device.
Unless someone has cooked up an aftermarket goodie that does this. And then I'm sure it's decent $$.

IMO Garmin really should put out a version of Basecamp for iPad, and a software conduit for connecting a Zumo/Oregon/Montana/whatever via the USB camera connection dongle.
I don't expect they will though. Therefore laptops are still the only feasible mobile solution for transferring data to the GPS device.

I use an HP Mini laptop. You can buy them used on ebay for $125-$150.

How about with a Mac in general. I tried some gpx converter a while back but coil never get it to work properly.

Basecamp works pretty well on the mac.
It's a shame the bluetooth won't move the data back and forth.
Bluetooth can and will. It's just a communication protocol. Whether or not the iPad and Zumo will is up to the manufacturers of those devices.
I used to use Bluetooth to move files (mostly pictures) from my phone to my laptop. No I just wait a few minutes and I can download them automatically.
