Does anyone know a place that lines old rusty gas tanks? I know there are several home kits available but I wanted to price out some professional work first.
This is not something I want to do twice.
Done. Got a call into him right now. Do you remember what it cost ballpark??
DesmoTull, you're dumb, and I'm quoting on top again. It was my side panel that got destroyed (literally, in pieces) Robbie *fixed* it, and it took best in class at the Larz Anderson Euro Bike Show less than a month later (hadn't gone back for the final clear yet), as nobody could tell a thing had ever been done to it.
He's good.
And I'm dumb.
See how good a listener I am??
send it to empiregp.com
they do at least a couple every week.
worse case you can still send it to them if someone else fuck's it up.

Just did a honda magna one myself with the home kreem kit. $36 and it worked like a charm.
I got the Caswell Plating epoxy kit for $40, enough for two tanks, but haven't tried it yet.

Yeah honestly I think most of the horror stories regarding tank lining kits are the result of poor preparation and not the products fault. Having never done one I don't really know.
Asking about tank liners on some of the bike restoration forums I visit can get the same result as asking which oil is best.
I have a couple of issues with this tank. First up it is a bike I am doing for someone and I don't want to learn(F it up) on his tank. Second, the thing already has been lined(F'ed up) and I need to remove that first. Dunno if the kits really account for that.
Having a pro do it would be the best route, anyone know any more locals that do it?? Robbie seems to be MIA.
I've used the Caswell product on 2 bikes (both had Carbon fiber tanks) The product is great!!
What I've found works best to clean out the tank is sheet metal or drywall screws. Put them in the tank, and shake them up to knock the rust and old liner free. The longer the better.
Then when you do the sealer, make sure that the tank is sealed completely so the product cant get out. If it gets on your paint, you'll be repainting.
I watched Stones Cycles do it for someone before I tried it myself. i think he charged them close to $500 to do it, it was time consuming to do it right.
currently just an oldman bike, but searching for my new ride
.Sold to a guy in Mississippisearching for a new ride.
With glop (sealer, kreeme, or whatever it is) in your old tank you may have to use some kind of chemical stripper first -- sounds gruesome. I had a tank stripped and sandblasted, came out pretty good. Now I have to do a little body work and then seal it with the Caswell kit, then prime & paint. I had another spare tank for the same project, the sandblasting removed a few pounds of filler that was hiding under the paint and blasted holes in the bottom -- joke's on me haha!
So now I have a practice tank.
