    (back to the OP) looking at the 2nd photo sequence, it looks like the bike never really went down, so at least they saved it by bailing; like they say, a bike doesn't want to crash, the rider makes it do bad things.

    Looks to me like the hard bag hit the ground and lifted the rear tire.... like an extremely upright version of a lowside. My impression is they got tossed off and the only thing that "saved" them was their low speed.

    Well yeah...Harley Davidson is that newfangled mystery motorcycle machine that turns perfectly good gasoline into smelly fumes and annoying noise WITHOUT the threat of dazzling performance..
