im going to be pulling the wheels of the KTM to get them painted. i need to get the bike in the air and leave it there for a while. im in kind of a unique situation though. the bike is here at work. i can put the rear on a stand if need be but i cant do the front. my stem stand is too short and im afraid to use a fork stand as it will stick out too far and know someone will accidently kick it when walking by. i cant support it with straps from above because we have 30ft ceilings. i cant really put a jack under the frame like a dirt bike because it doesnt have a frame and the header pipe runs under/next to to the motor.
i really wanted to get the wheels off tomorrow but i cant seem to come up with a good way to do this.
When I start my KTM in the morning, rules are broken. Its inevitable...

Jack stands under the forks? A rod through under the front of the motor and jack stands each side?
I usually use tie downs to suspend it from the i-beam in the garage?

Get a couple of guys and lift it up.

Close your eyes, look deep in your soul, step outside yourself and let your mind go.
Just get a pair of those metal saw horse brackets and some 2x4's and make them 6' long.

I have a small portable gantry crane I made to suspend bikes, has a winch on top. Straddles the bike and you can attach lifting straps to the frame.
You are more than welcome to you use, I just do not have any time to get it anywhere near you.

It's not sketchy as long as the bike is on a rear stand also.Originally Posted by SVRACER01

What is the foot traffic like where the bike will be? What are the chances of someone getting close to the bike?
Waaaaiiiittt a second. Isn't the KTM a friggin sumo? Just leave it laying on it's side and turn the gas off or lean it up against the wall in a corner!

Oxx, u got access to an A frame ladder big enough to clear the bike? You could use that to suspend the bike from. Or just lower the forks onto the ground like Smutters said. I've done that before.
You could also get some wood blocks if the floor is too far of a reach.

i think the plan is that im going to get a large 8 wheeled diesel crane and put it in the building somehow and hoist the bike up.
i think i can get a crane from the bridge project up the street

Yeah I think we can all agree that's clearly the most reasonable & practical solution.

A piece of pipe through the hole for the axle and rest it on 2 jack stands.Crane sounds easier.

Lol. He has to get the wheel off.Originally Posted by obsolete
Two jack stands and a breaker bar through your frame.
Or, you could way overthink this.

Actually, the 690 is damn tough to suspend. I haven't found any stable solution. The bottom of the motor is a V and there is no frame below the head brackets. The steering head bolt is solid, so no pin stand. The rake makes it sketchy on just about any kind of jack stands...

I have no idea what it looks like, but I've seen so many times a strong ladder up front with ratchet straps to hold it up from the front.. looks pretty awesome. and sturdy that nobody would knock over a ladder![]()
FWIW Paul. ive seen that someone makes an attachment for yours that resembles an engine cradle. it escapes me at the moment where i saw it though
edit: found it
