Guess this is a good a place as any to post this pic of a bunch of us ex-LRRS/NewEnglanders holding it down on the West. Ari and Zack are great dudes! They just got done doing a 6-hour race on one of those things.

I'm not sure of I want a grom or a motoped, rode one of the motopeds last night and let me tell ya it was quite a blast, it was one with a 125 motor not a 50, so technically it's illegal but it was fun as hell

    Re: The Grom Escape

Even with a 50 motor it's technically illegal - operator controlled gearbox. (Also likely over the BHP limit too...) You CAN get two speed autos that meet the letter of the law, but it'd suck the fun right out of the motoped.

MA doesn't care as long as its under 50cc....and you get the sticker. NH is even easier and cheaper $8 for a plate for the year.

Getting a plate/sticker != actually legal. Just 'cause it's got a sticker a cop that knows the rules can still bust your ass.

According to Massachusetts law, a moped is a "motorized bicycle." In order to be classified as a moped, the vehicle must:

Have a cylinder capacity of no more than 50 cubic centimeters.
    Have an automatic transmission.
Be capable of a maximum speed of no more than 30 miles per hour.
Comply with all applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards.
I'm told the RMV has a list. If your machine isn't on the list, you aren't allowed to register it as a moped.
I am told that many ignore the whole thing, go stickerless, and successfully get off by claiming ignorance when stopped.

I have read the laws, granted the one I rode went over the 30mph because it had a Bigger motor, the motor only has one small marking that says 124cc that can easily be smoothed out and covered up with a little spray paint as the head is already black! the motor is still an automatic, semi-auto but it doesn't say anywhere that it has to be fully automatic! And the guy has had it for 4 years and never been bothered, a cop isn't really going to look twice if your not being a complete asshole or something, so quiet to you almost don't even know it has a motor

If you dig in further, automatic is defined as no operator selection of individual gears, it has to be a pure twist and go.

i really just can't imagine a cop knowing the law that well, and my understanding is its only $100 fine anyways!

I sat on the Grom last night. It is very tall for how short the wheelbase is. Ergos are actually comfy for a small adult.

Myself and a few other forums members were at a gas station in Newport NH last Sunday when an OG gangsta Hillbilly pulled up to us on a Grom and asked for some help adjusting his clutch cable. We helped him out, chatted for a few minutes, and he went on his merry way. After waiting for a few minutes at a red light, once it turned green, he stood it up and wheelied right through the intersection...good times
