I started trying to do wheelies when I was five. Best one was later on a ten speed into my front yard and then the lamp post
tried to hide the damage from my pops .... yea right , he
he kicked my ass. that was the end of my one wheeled adventures.

even with the 1k cbr I might do a power wheelie but thats it.
the odds of crashing are high enough just by being on the road. riding or otherwise.

I'll take these odds : 1 minor accident in 30,000 miles and 1 major crash in 80,000 miles

A lot of non-motorcycling folks like to preach how dangerous riding is and how crazy we all are. Many would argue that it's our life and we know the risks. The enjoyment of riding is worth it and we accept the fact. Now you have riders preaching danger to other riders over wheelies. I guess the same argument can be made. Think riding is crazy- don't do it. Think wheelies are crazy-don't do them. The funny thing is, not doing wheelies does not necessarily make you a good rider. That shit is an illusion.

So riding your bike fast is safer than doing a controlled wheelie? You can die doing both and I don't beleive one is anymore dangerous tthan the other.Your statement doesn't make much sense to me, no offense, but I'm having trouble understanding. I guess you could say: You look at people doing wheelies on bikes ( You're going to die doing that ) much like non-motorcycle riders look at us motorcyclsts (your going to die doing that).

It's actually not a bad skill to have if you're about to run into something (rock, tree branch, etc) that's gonna stop you hard and throw you over the front.

Riding over with just the back and bouncing a little is usually less painful. Even if you fall off.

Guess i'm a squid... No one other then the pople i'm riding with see my wheelies, but mostly I throw it up when i'm alone, when I get a good straightaway.. Just a quick power wheelie.. But the TLR is a heavey lump, and now my forks are leaking all over Peters bench ...

That being said, I do believe that having MORE options is better than having less. But any skill's value as an option is only as good as your ability to pull it off. So I do think there's an argument in there for practice. Just me though.

i've tried plenty of times to learn when i was younger. all i did was scare myself and beat up my bikes. i gave up, screw it. i can scare myself and crash just as effectivly in corners and i enjoy that more so that is where i take my risks instead. i do however enjoy watching other people wheelie. especially guys that are good at it. it's deffinatly a cool moto skill in my book.

clutch stand up is impressive but i think it's short life for the clutch? i only do power jerk up.

If your fork seals blow after three hard wheelie landings, there's a problem imo. I put plenty down hard, it just wasn't a normal/ongoing thing so in the long run it didn't equate to much extra wear n' tear on the forks. I've seen bikes blow fork seals without ANY wheelies...so I guess it just depends on the bike.

Unrelated to the mechanical issues of doing wheelies: One time (first year riding, I was a total squid) I put my cbr1000F down so hard that I smashed my nutts on the tank hard enough that I had to stop and get off the bike to lay down for 20 minutes. That was 7 years ago and one of my nutts still hurts.

Pwahahahahahahah. Been there done that!!!!! On a 1996 GSXR 1100, belmont street Brockton.......good lord that hurt like a mutha.

yea, no chopping the throttle back while it's up there ffs... that could be bad for fork seals (and your family jewels).

most wheelies are smooth, but a couple that fuck you up on and don't get to the balance point right and you hit the rev limiter, sucks sucks sucks... never snap your throttle back, use your rear brake, it's the only thing it's good for..

Oh and if you let KB ride your bike, make sure you tell him your rear brake sucks and doesnt work....

You're right. You assume risk no matter how you ride. It's my personal preference to not wheelie. Personally, I associate wheeling with a higher-propensity to being involved in an accident. That's just me

I agree only becuase I had an incident with a 4x4 piece of 1/2" plywood on 195 while on the hawk.... out of a pick up over and over 3-4 times hit the ground, I down shifted hit it with the front up and layed the plywood down, other then that I woulda cracked it in half
