So I have a 4 pin on my van but the new trailer is a 2 axle 30ft with a 7 pin.
Can I just get a converter to 7 pin? Do I need a brake controller? Does the trailer need a fresh battery to work the brakes?
I only every plan to tow it 7 miles down the road but would like to get it set up properly.
Any insight would be appreciated.
7 Pin implies that the trailer has brakes, backup, and/or charging circuits.
30 foot - you absolutely want brakes. There's a member on the site selling a Prodigy P3 controller - it's an awesome controller. I'd buy that and wire your TV for brakes.

Seems right in your wheelhouse.
7 miles? Depending on the tow vehicle (if the brakes are good enough) I suspect you may be able to get away without a brake controller. But I imagine the stopping distances will be ... long.
Grand rental station has a module that plugs into the 4 pin and has a brake controller built in with a 7 pin output.. If I remember right it had magnets to the trailer .
You get a wireless remote with it to adjust the brakes.
I used it when I rented a skidsteer/trailer from them before I bought a truck a OEM controller.
Brake controller, yes. Even in a seemingly short 7 miles, chances are you will run into a situation where you will want that extra braking power on tap.
How heavy is the trailer & what's your tow vehicle?
While I don't really recommend it due to the additional risk involved, I've begrudgingly towed my 4-5,000 pound 14 footer with brakes disabled because I needed to replace them before. I just stayed extra vigilant to avoid any surprise quick stops. It can be done, but yes, anything can happen.

Only 7 miles? Be smart and safe and everyone will survive just fine. Don't speed and leave tons of following distance and prepare for steep down grades.
Pretty sure the van in question is an GMC/Chevy Astro Van if that helps with anyone's advice
Send it.
