How the hell does this happen?

The back fairing on my R1 separated, so to speak. I pulled the seat cowl off, nothing is cracked, no bolts look out of alignment.

These pics kind of suck, (the flash makes it look worse than it is) but none of the little clip-in bits on the side fairing bits are cracked or broken in the least - they just popped out. It looks like I'm actually going to have to take the back section apart to put them back in, because I can't flex them enough to get them to pop back in to the top section.

Random as hell - anyone had this happen before? At first I thought someone whacked me in a parking lot or something, but there's no marks or anything.

maybe stuff got hot in the sun when parked, and therefore more pliable and flexed when you sat on it?

It was definitely hot out on Saturday, but I wasn't riding around sitting on my back seat, haha.

Re: How the hell does this happen?

yeah no doubt, but i was just thinking that maybe it flexed even by itself, maybe expanded or whatever. plus, sitting on the front seat probably shifts all that tailsection around a little bit i would imagine.

Re: How the hell does this happen?

I'm happy that it's not something broken, but I took a cursory peek and I have no idea how the fuck to even begin taking that tail section apart.

I think I'm going to need a service manual..

There are a couple of plastic clips that snap in to hold the two pieces together. They're about an inch and a half long and are wide and pointy on one end and have a flat head on the other.

They get installed from the bottom (above the exhaust cans) and probably vibrated out or broke?

Probably wasn't assembled properly or was taken apart at some point and not put back together correctly. Heat and vibrations probably caused it to become misaligned but I'd guess those hooks weren't hooked into the top piece.

LOL that is an easy fix no need to worry too much unless some of those Plastic Clips "sdog30" mentioned are broken.

For what it's worth, there was a body style change from the 04 to the 07 R1.

IMO, it's unlikely that it just popped out on it's own, or the heat did it. My guess is it was 1, not installed correctly, 2 it was bumped or hit at some point. What's that small mark on the tail section point?

That little mark's been there forever. I still blame Sheppo.

It matches my freshly-broken license plate frame perfectly, no?

Looks like the tal light is aftermarket. The tal section had to be removed and those clips are a bitch to get back in, so maybe they were never put back in all the way and vibrated out at some point.

Nah, it's stock, I bought the bike brand new. The tail section WAS off though, when I had the catless y-pipe put in up at Motopoint.

I'll take a peek at it this weekend and just start taking shit apart. You'll know I started because there will be threads from me asking how to put it back together shortly thereafter.

I really hope nothing's warped. I'm actually kicking around the idea of selling this at the end of the season to pick up something more sport-toury and commute friendly.
