The new Bell helmet is on sale right now for $199.00. It is a $600 helmet and flows a ton of air. Maybe check that out? http://www.motorcyclecloseouts.com/s...+recoil+helmet
Also, I am just admittedly snobby against Icon helmets. Whenever I see one I can't help thinking that the rider is going to do something stupid. Unfortunately I don't have a great reason for it other than seeing alot of squids in beaters/shorts and Icon lid. I have heard that their build quality has gotten a little better though.
What happened to it? The older ones would have problems with the plastic side covers popping off if the visor wasn't changed correctly. Arai corrected the mechanics of the problem but they will still come off if you really force it. Even so, anyone that I've ever known to contact them about a broken ear cover was sent the replacement parts at no cost.
It's all water under the bridge, and we do enter the next round-robin. Am I wrong?
I have the Scorp EXO 1000, its a very nice helmet. I also have a few other high dollar helmets and I wear the Scorp 99% of the time. Love the blast shield style 'sunglasses' built in.
How bout instead of acting like a friggin dink to someone who makes a LIVING selling helmets you clarify your statements right off the bat.... or just avoid words that can be misconstrued all together.
By your selective definition, the word "Cheap" is different to me than it is to you. I associate "crappy quality" with "cheap".
Thus to me, Shark is NOT "cheap".... You can BUY them for "cheap", yes (compared to other top brands). But are the helmets themselves "cheap"? Not from what I've seen in my limited experience with them.

Loving this thread, as I'm in the market for a new helmet. Speaking of inexpensive vs. cheap, anyone race in HJC stuff? I've been using their dirt bike and street bike helmets for years with good results. I've "tested" several models, all but one dirt, and have been happy (or at least eventually coherent again) with the results. I'd like to avoid buying a real high dollar helmet to take to the track where I'm expected to end up crashing anyway, especially in the rain. Be nice to be able to toss it without too hard a hit on the wallet if I do go down. At the same time, if I don't have the motor functions to toss it anymore it wasn't much of a deal...
(yes, I know how important fit is, and will be getting one that fits regardless of anything else. So far HJC has been one of the few companies able to properly fit my coneheaded dome)

Well my impression on the someone who makes a living selling helmets came out of the box bashing on this guys choices.
Had Noel not started his first post with 'JUNK' and started with they are of lesser quality, the orig poster may not have had the backed into a corner feeling to defend his choices.
I dont like Icon either, and would not wear one. I have absolutly no knowledge of them other than 'stunters wear them' so I hate them, type of snobbery.
Scorpion, in my trying on, using on the street and trackdays, seems to be a VERY nice helmet for less money than the snobby Shoei, Arai or Suomy (of which I own a Shoei and a Suomy)
I would love to have an Arai, but I have yet to find one that fits properly. I have tried on the RX7, Quantum and Vector..I just dont like the fit. Which is too bad cause I know they are nice helmets. Im not opposed to spending $700+ for a helmet. I like helmets, I have a few and will probably keep buying them once a year or every other year. Price is always a factor but not a super concern for me. I picked the Scorpion cause it fit well, felt great and the options on it are things I will use not just gimics to get me to buy it or justify the price.
Would Mat Mladin wear it if it were 'JUNK'?? He keeps it real and dont say cause of sponsorship alone, Im sure that has something to do with it but not everything.
okay so that goes for noel, tooAnyway....
As for what Mladin wears... I couldn't care less what that cocky jackass puts on his big fat head. All I know is that if someone told me that his helmet was exactly like the AC12 (or whatever the latest top HJC lid is now) that you or I can pick up off the shelf, I'd have a VERY hard time believing it.
Anyway, my point is simply that, to me, there's a very big difference between "cheap" and "inexpensive" and it seems that some people think they're interchangable when to most people they're not. People should be clear in what they're saying & clear up any misunderstandings before acting out and making personal attacks (which are prohibited on NESR... just a heads up)

See how the Icon uses an external piece to secure the lense? It creates a pocket on the sides of the helmet that catch air. This typically creates a noisy helmet, sometimes whistles too, and will give a rough ride at higher speeds. I had a cheaper Shoie with that type of setup and hated it.

oh yaaaah.... spies was Hjc, not fathead... What's he wear? Scorpion? Same goes then. I'm doubtful that it's of the shelf. With Arai, I've been told the only changes between what they get and what we get might be the shield & typically it's just the ddition of posts for tear-offs. Anyway.... Details schmetails.

I know this isnt how you mean it, but its coming across this way Pete.
Icon = bad cause stuntas wear it.
Arai, Shoei = Good because racers wear it, and they get what we get (we think)
Scorpion, HJC = Bad because racers wear it, but we doubt they get it off the shelf.
If you're referring to my post, keep in mind I was merely responding to being called a noob, which IMO can be considered a personal attack. Don't jump on my post just because I have a low post count, though. Believe me, I know how forums work; you don't have to justify why you responded to my post specifically after 3 weeks.
And next time I'll clarify for those who get offended at the mere mention of a helmet they may like.

I wasn't jumping on anyone's post in particular, just reminding everyone to keep things civil. But if you ask my opinion, getting called a noob is HARDLY a persnal attack.... At least in the typical context.

well if ya wanna take it like that I suppose you can... But that wasn't really what I was getting at. All I'm saying is that the top brands who don't change their helmet design for top level athletes don't do so because they probably don't warrant any changes. Who wears what isn't important to me as who DOESN'T wear what... I don't see Icon on many starting grids.Originally Posted by Pittenger5

I know what you meant, other people might miss it. Too often the arguments for one helmet vs another is, well only stunters wear that one, so it must suck. Well Mladin wears that one it must be good. Which is obviously wrong. Stunters wear those cause they look cool and they dont give those products to racers. Mladin wears that one cause he gets em free, and probably some money too.
I have a mint condition Arai RX7 edwards replica helmet that I'd be willing to sell. It was worn about 5 times, and came with medium padding. I recently bought large padding at Seacost. So this helmet will fit as a medium or large. this is what it looks like:
PM me if you're interested
ALOT of money... The winning-est AMA racer ever could have any helmet he wants for free. I'm sure that given the choice, he would rock one of the high end helmets. Scorpion makes helmets specifically for him and pays a fortune to put it on his head... Just like KBC used to do for him.

I've owned Arai, Scorpion and AGV.
The only one I crashed in was the Scorpion. I hit my face/chin pretty good and came out unscathed. That was an ex400 as well.
I would stay away from any lid that has outside gadgets and obstructions that could catch and "hook" something in a get off.
I hope none of you visit a friend in the hospital with a broken neck, and a lid with the goofy vent design thingy ripped clean off.
Better to have a lid clean and round than to take a chance.
Gman' any input here?
