I've been giving a little bit of thought to attaching my phone to the bars of my CB550. I use the GPS map feature quite a bit. A few turns I can memorize, but lots of my rides lead me to the middle of nowhere. Having to pull off, stop, take off my gloves, and fish out my phone to see where I'm at is a bit of a PITA. Then of course I've gotta put it back and get my gloves back over the cuffs of my jacket and situated comfortably.... ends up taking 5 minutes for something I could accomplish with a glance at a red light if the phone was on the bars.
I'm not sure of any other non-permanant ways to mount it I'd trust though. I thought velcro, but don't think I'd trust it at speeds and over bumps.
Thought of safety wire, but that'd make taking a call a bit of a bitch, and it's a bit of a process to mount at the start of each ride.
Thoughts?
lots of people use RAM mounts. Google them

Velcro. Yes Velcro. Totalled a bike by flipping it into a ditch. Phone stayed on. If you have a flatspot. If not this is Oreo's problem
Thanks Duck. Willdo. They don't seem to make anything for my phone, and want a bike model 91 or newer... know of anyone that stocks a bunch I could check out to make something work?
Petey Pab! Where you at?
I've got a flat spot on the bars, but the back of the phone could be a problem. The big flat area is the battery cover... I could see that coming open way too easy. The only other option is only 1/2" wide, which would allow a small strip of velcro, but then all the phone is supported by the very top of it. Maybe if I can find a spot big enough (or make a plate) to allow a patch on the battery cover and another patch above the speaker so it can't just slide the battery cover open and send the phone, less the battery cover, flying?

duct tape the bitch to your tank and don't look back...
Just don't follow me...as some will attest I am the king of U-Turns
Put it in a map pocket of a tank bag. Should be able to see it threw the plastic.

Are there any sort of solidly built cases available for your phone? You could maybe attach that to the ram mount (via velcro, etc) and then insert/remove your phone at will. Just a thought.
woot! thanks to this thread, i just ordered this:

if anyone else is thinking of getting it, i saved $9 by ordering through ablackhorse.com

3M makes some stuff called dual-lock that is like velcro but about 10X stronger, I get it at Radio Shack.
Dan,
I ziploc-ed mine and duck taped it to the tank prior to getting the scala comm. system. Save up and get the bluetooth deal -- it's SO worth it.

I just velcroed one of those quick release hard cases onto my handlebars... works fine. Phone shakes a bit as the quick release belt clip doesn't hold it steady, but no biggie.
Be aware though that it's kinda tricky riding a bike, looking down at the phone & seeing what's on the screen, especially if it's in the sun... to fix that I've got a Cardo Systems Scala Rider Q2 bluetooth headsets & I can get turn-by-turn audio through that.
