If I remember correctly, I think Ducati may have given that bike to Foggy himself. I recall a photo of him on one in MCN many many years ago.
Quite a few ex-racers selling their bikes off, Kenny Roberts and Freddie Spencer both had / have old GP bike for sale.

True, but it only takes one idiot.

Was talking to a guy at a party last night who knows a wealthy guy that collects old Ferraris -- the 1950/60s kind that are worth $1-2 million. He was saying that a lot of these old cars are wrecks that have been "restored" by building a new car from scratch.

He said he knew personally of one old Ferrrari that had wrecked on the track and caught fire, and instead of being disposed of it had been thrown in the corner of a barn and forgotten about. It was bought by somebody who spent $500k restoring it -- replacing basically everything but the serial number plate, and then sold at auction for like $1.2 mil.

This guy said the market is driven by this fringe of idiots that happen to have a lot of money and a collective obsession with Ferrari history. They're effectively just trading serial number plates.

Yeah, but a 60s ferrari is something different. To my knowledge, that same sense of preservation hasn't really taken root in the modern motorcycle world. It's just too easy to create a facsimile of any limited edition for a fraction of the "collector" value.

Sure, I agree. My only point is that the "value" of something is only driven by the amount that one person is willing to pay, and that there's almost no limit to how crazy people can be.
