R1 with a double fatality.
Why?
If loud pipes save lives, imagine what learning to ride would do.
That's just awful.

That is sad. I drove past that spot at about 5:45 this morning. Sounds like I probably drove past two corpses. Sad.
That sucks but wasn't it raining last night? I know it was around here this morning.

No, not until later in the morning.
this was discussed heavily on the zx6r.com forum yesterday and a local member on that forum apparently shared a beer with that couple earlier in the evening... according to him they were wearing only jackets for gear.

That's aweful, I hope they didn't suffer.
The other day a friend of my boss died on his harley, according to reports he didn't have a scratch but bonked the back of his head. Atgatt folks
that's a shame, it makes you wonder sometimes.
a perfect example of news media publishing unverified or assumed information that may or may not be true
around the same time, another leo clocked a bike at 119mph, (may or may not be the same bike, who knows for sure) 119 grew to 120 in the headline
2 people died, the rest is speculation

I'm on 101 all the time either slabbing to or from a ride. I see riders on bikes all the time w/o gear... Talking jackets, boots and helmets and the lack there of. I don't remember if the report said the riders had head protection. Wheather it would of helped who knows.
Based on the photos from another news site which show one of the highway 101 signs bent over and snapped in half before the bike hit the big highway sign.. no gear = no chance in this case. Turns out the girl was from 5 mins from where I lived in MA. We did a photo shoot with her a while back, beautiful girl, nice girl, and seemed to have a decent sized family in town there. Her Facebook also shows a bike of her own that seems to have been getting painted or something from a tip over.
Ive ridden that stretch a few times, its a mind numbing ride at 70-75 and you can easily latch on to another car or bike and find yourself at 100-110 quickly cruising that stretch back from the beach... but not with a passenger. Thoughts and prayers going out to them, their friends, and families.

I am also curious what kind of protection the riders had on. This sort of thing tends to get me re-thinking my "I wear gear, I'm reasonably safe" mantra.
I travel that stretch almost daily. I set my cruise between 70 and 75 in the car and pass most. >100 MPH speeds are NOT the norm, not even close. That section is also well patrolled by the NHSP. Nobody should be going that fast through there, IMO.
I think that section is early on 101? I think the mind numbing section is a little bit after that where its straight and pretty flat all the way to Manchester. I think that is more the section I was referring to as being a little bit of a quicker section especially at 1am or coming back from NED.
Even with gear I dont know that they would have had a ton of opportunity on this one. http://kidfrank.blogspot.com/2012/09...otorcycle.html Look at the first sign they took out, even with full leather thats going to either take off a leg or close and then the path leads to and under the bigger highway sign with more steel impact. 6 hours is a long time... although helmets might have allowed a chance to make a cell call or somehow flag down help.
I was just telling someone else, I rarely ride here in NC right now because of the traffic and shitty drivers in my city, I dont even feel safe in my truck these days. Be careful out there!

.....Police said they believe the crashed motorcycle was the same one noticed by a state trooper at 12:30 a.m. about 2 miles before the crash scene near the Guinea Road overpass in Exeter. The motorcycle was traveling 119 mph, police said.
"(The trooper) was running radar. A motorcycle went by him," LeLacheur said. "He tried to keep a visual on the motorcycle but only went 100 yards or so and realized the motorcycle was out of his sight. He made no attempt to even try to stop at that point because of the severity of the speed."
The investigation revealed that the motorcycle was traveling west on Route 101 when it left the paved portion of the road and went onto the shoulder before colliding with two traffic signs.

Here are the pertinent details.....some meatstick took himself and his passenger out for no reason whatsoever.
1 mph or a safe assumption does not change the outcome of this story.
I don't know why, but this one spooks me more than most.
Fosters seems to have a good report.
Speculation time.
That area of 101 slopes down from where the LEO spotted the bike from a turn-out. At the bottom of the hill there is a moderate left-hander past the 108 interchange. I bet the LEO lit the rider up and he punched it to evade. An R1 that starts a down-hill run at well over 100 MPH is probably really moving once it gets ~2 miles down that hill. I bet he simply failed to negotiate the turn.
Dumb. Unfortunate.

The article did state that the LEO pulled out and travelled 100yards before deciding not to pursue. It does not tell us if he lit up or not. If the rider even just saw the LEO sitting on the side of the road, that could have even been enough for him to punch it knowing he was already going well above the speed limit.
Also, if you look at the pictures in the article, notice the distance between the severed sign, the big green exit sign, and how far behind the exit sign the bike finally rested. For that much distance to be covered after initial impact, I think its safe to say the bike was travelling at a good clip.
Does that make 75 fatalities (all vehicles) this year? More by now then all of last year.
And, as the signs say, '...one is too many.'
