Friend of mine is heading to Portsmouth NH this week from CT and wants to know if there are any ice tracks on the way. Has a bike and just wants to ride.

Most lakes out my way are frozen solid with very little-to-no snow cover...

i dont think theres much if anything on the way to portsmouth. if he wants to go a little north of portsmouth, theres a reservoir in dover that i believe theres a track on or north of that theres barnstead or milton. if he goes north into ME maybe mousam lake

Willand Pond maybe? I feel like I've heard of people running there before.
I wonder what Bellamy is like. There's a public put in with some parking right off Rt 9.
Bellamy is what i was referring to. ive been told that there is usually a track out there. IDK what shape it is though. ive considered Willand but theres a lot of houses right on it...

It's just wide open frozen smoove lake for us right now. Yeah, I said smoove. Can't use food coloring to lay out a track, people would freak. Maybe I'll look into cones...

I have a shit-ton of scrap wood, sheet-rock screws and a healthy supply of obnoxious orange paint.
I meant I'd make some pylon type things that looked and worked kind of like cones. The scrap wood would be painted, not the ice.
That said, Toys 'R Us sells plastic cone sets for like $6 ea... and my wood stove wants to eat that scrap wood.
How big is your pond? Planning on setting up an oval, roadcourse or both?

You talkin' to me? It's not a huge lake, but it's plenty big. I usually do a roadcourse-type thing. For some reason, each year I do it, it seems to be incredibly similar to the previous ones. And I always set out to do it differently. Always ends up laid out similarly and the course always seems to end up about 1/2 mile or so long. There's usually a couple of small ovals cleaned up on either end of our lake, so I stick with a roadcourse. Great thing is there's really no public parking/access so none of the set-ups get overly saturated...

Being the nerd that I am, I showed up with a gps laptimer on the ice last weekend. Here's the layout they had created at the spot I was at:
The course was just over 2km long (1.25 miles) and I hit a top speed of 50 mph. My best time was 2:20, which means I'm slow on all surfaces.

If anything, that course was a bit on the long side. Very cool.. but man, quite long. ... Or maybe the problem was my pace.
I noticed they'd plowed a cut-off between your #8 and #3 marks. Interested in what that shorter course would have been like. Especially with the small number of riders that were out there.
I need to get on ice with you cats!

I would say Willand Pond is out of the question:
"Rules: No vehicles with internal combustion engines on pond year round. Fines up to $1,000 for motorized vehicle use."

Uhm.. that's definitely good to know!
Bellamy is a reservoir too, isn't it? I know motor boats are prohibited. Does that apply to winter use as well?
How about Pawtuckaway? There is a large public landing with gobs of parking.
