I have a RAM mount for my Garmin nuvi and it sucks. The hemisphere on the mount is a hair too small, so the GPS literally falls off it when I'm riding down the road. I bitched about it to RAM and they sent me a new one, and it has exactly the same problem.
So, what are my choices for an inexpensive mount for my iPhone 6? I would only use it a couple of times a year, so don't need anything elaborate.
(This is for a VFR 800)
I'm surprised to hear you're unhappy with RAM. I've got a few balls, arms, and mounts and they all fit rock solid. I'm the type who's really nervous about that stuff and I was really happy with it - including their generic X-arm phone holder.
What about a 3M Dual Lock strip on the back of a phone case? Then place a strip of Dual Lock on a flat spot. It's the same stuff EzPass transponders ship with but available twice as wide. Probably not what you had in mind, but I'm not sure there's much else out there that isn't just another RAM-type system. There's a few tank bags with pockets angled up designed for a GPS that'd prob work with a phone.

Absoloutely love the RAM stuff. I have a couple x-grips lying around I use for holding cell phones, GPSes, track timers, whatever. Solid stuff that holds up well (even to crashes) and is extremely versatile. I also have a couple of the nuvi specific holders. All have been great to me.
Also surprised you don't like.
Which ram mount are you having problems with?
My RAM X-Grip has been flawless.

Check out SlipGrip, works great.

"Could you elaborate on that a bit? Just telling me not to run a specific tire, and giving me no true logical explanation is like telling me I'm going to get my dick sucked tonight, and not by whom."

Very solid. It's weird. It doesn't look like it should hold stuff as well as it does. But it does.
The one time I had something eject is when I toss'ed a bike across some curbing at Thompson. My lap timer popped out and wound up next to the bike. Can't fault it.
It's actually hard to get the phone out of the X-Grip with just 1 hand (not that I've ever tried that, like when it starts raining, or something).
I run mine "horizontal" so there's support directly under the phone, but I wouldn't hesitate to run it the other way (if I liked it that way).
I have no idea what's going on with #9's garmin mount. The RAM stuff I've used has been extremely solid.
I've got an x-grip in my car and on my naked triumph. I've never lost an iPhone at well into the triple digits on either.
Like I said earlier, super nervous about that stuff. And I've almost given up doing head-checks on the phone in an X-Grip. It never moves. I mount mine vertical. The only complaint I could have is that the way the arms sit, the phone-and-arms can freely rotate maybe 25 degrees side to side. It's an annoyance, but not a concern.
I did read a few reviews were people claimed they had a phone pop free while riding. I guess maybe if your case/phone was very slippery and had a light coating of oil on it? Otherwise seems like it'd be a rare event.

If you have any normal case on your phone, it won't come out. If it's bare metal, doesn't matter. You've already dropped it out of your hand and smashed it.

I'd take a picture of it and post it, but I can't put my phone in it, and then take a picture of it in said mount. I'm not a ninja.

yup, x grip here too. love that thing. i even bought a mount for my car to put the x grip on for my i pod.
holds i pod without any case on it and has held my GS3 and 5 with a case on and off the track. ive even used for a GPS.
When I start my KTM in the morning, rules are broken. Its inevitable...

So this is what I have right now. It's a RAM-B-174U:
And this is what holds - badly - my Nuvi. The RAM-HOL-GA22U:
That's the part that doesn't get a good grip on the GPS. In fact it's come off once while I was riding! I called RAM and they were kind enough to send me a replacement, but it has the same problem.
Should I just get an X-grip holder and attach it to the big mount I already have? This generic option looks like it would fit. The RAM-HOL-UN7BU:
I have an iPhone 6. Or the RAM-HOL-AP18U, which is specific to the iPhone:
I guess the advantage of the X-grip one is that I can leave my iPhone in its case. With the iPhone-specific one, I can't.

Ugh, Slipgrip, FTW!!!Cheap and it works!!!
I in fact didn't read all of the thread, apologies if there is some feature you're looking for that the Slipgrip doesn't provide...
