Turns out he hasn't made a payment since he got the bike in may '04. Just got off the 'phone with American Honda who were very pleased to hear from me. They have been looking for him and the bike for 18 months. I think they are going to sign the Lien over to me so I just have to give the guy my bill for storage and repair work ($16,000) and when he doesn't pay, the title can be re-issued in my name.

Yeah, but it's a writeoff for them. All these big companies, they write off everything.

The bike is at my place for repairs and until the bill is paid it isn't going anywhere. American Honda cannot get it from me once it is on my property. They have written the debt off, so in the end it really isn't worth them paying a repo guy and lawyers to get the bike back for auction where they might get 3k for it.

Getting the 16k might be tough but getting the bike would be worth it. But if you can put it on his credit that he owes you 16k if he ever gets a mortgage the bank will make him clear it up or settle with you. Might be worth it to look into how to do that.

Write off. It's an accounting term to level your financial's. Writing off is a means to expense a balance sheet asset (item) that has no future benefits.
