But isn't that what we're trying to do here?

    Solve his friend's gah-bage wheelies?

Just because its easier doesn't make it safer or right. I know this site is king of anti wheelie and wear your gear. But 90% of the guys i ride with also stunt. The whole mash the gas itll come out its extremely stupid and unsafe. Its all clutch bp and rear break keeping the throttle where it is the entire wheelie

its the crown in the road. try it in a parking lot or someplace flat.
youre..umm...hes just gonna have to start the wheelie at the center of the road. maybe "he" thinks hes hanging way off the bike but "he" really isnt...kinda like trackday noobs

Last time I clutched up on a bike, I wrapped my chain around the rear peg mount. I was lucky it didn't rip a hole in my leg or lock the rear wheel up.

Needless to say I will never clutch up again. It's power or nothing for me. I've found that powering it up is much more predictable on my bike.

I very rarely do wheelies, but when I do I don't balance them. Usually just a quick up and down in first.

I've got news for ya... the chain was probably ready to go either way, it was just the act of clutching it up that pushed it over the edge. Had you given the bike a healthy whack of throttle, the same thing probably would have happened.

Indisputable fact: A motorcycle's throttle response will always be smoother as you shift up in the gears... 4th is less twitchy than 3rd, 3rd is less twitchy than 2nd & so on.... thus if you clutch it up in one gear higher than you can power it up in, the throttle response will be smoother & more predictable.

Clutch it up, power it up, whatever, "my friend" does both.... but don't tell me or anyone else that powering it up is better or safer. They're both dangerous, but clutching it up is noticeably more predictable & consistent.

    .... or so I've heard

What have I done? I started a wheelie thread

A little maintainence will probably go a long way towards keeping the chain actually on the bike. True story...

The biggest difference is I power it up at 30mph, whereas in a higher gear to clutch it up you have to be going 50-60. There are no parking lots around here long enough to get that much speed, pick it up and ride it out.

I never said powering it up is safer, I merely said with my experience I won't be clutching it up ever again. Was it my fault that the chain went due to lack of maintenance? Yeah, it probably was, but the experience still sucked and I don't want that to happen to me ever again. That's why I keep them at a low speed using the throttle.

Sorry, didn't mean to offend the wheelie masters of the world. A quick up and down is the only thing that will fit in any parking lot in southern VT...unless you recommend I pull them on the roads.
