I spend about 25% of the day riding on average, about the same amount as I sleep
WTF you talking about, 75% of what?![]()

YOUR CAPABILITY!
"fuckit!"
Your capability or your bikes?
On the track I probably use about 85% to 90% of my ability and 60% on the street, but my 60% may be more or less for others.
As far as my bikes capability, an SV 650, on the track I'm running 1:30 laps. It can easily run 1:22-23's with a good rider onboard, on street tires.
Right at about 75% I'd guess when I want to get into it in the corners.
In the straights though... much less than 75%![]()

I hear talk like this all the time and wonder what to fuck are these guys talking about.
I like to think that I ride to 100% of my ability all the time and pay attention to what I am doing and where I am.![]()

I have no clue what my capabilities are so I just ride as fast as I know I can stop or manuver around a fixed object in the road way. I mean how does one know what perecent they are at? I would say 50% I'm worried about, road conditions, cars and LEO's so I always try to stay within that comfort zone....

Wouldn't you be riding 100 percent of your capability as it is today. And tommorro you may be a little bit better but still you are riding at 100 percent of your capability at that time.
Or are we supposed to figure out just what our top ability is, assuming at some point we stop learning and honing our skills and then figure.......wait, how do I know what I am capable of in the future if I have not done that yet.........oh, this is too hard.
How would I know....I suck at riding![]()
I can't answer this question, the percentage is around the ratio of riding to weather quality with a standard deviation of half the percentages difference from last summer multiplied by the inverse of the initial ability of half squid.
Lets make easy for you to understand.Originally posted by RandyO

Lets say your riding Deals Gap, and if your riding it a 100%, you'd be on the edge of crashing out or having alot of oh shits, like blowing corners, and crossing yellow line. Now if you tone it down to 75% of your ability, your more under control and are able to deal with most situations and road conditions.
im just curious. Keith Codes says half of his students can be coach to a high level of technical skills in couple days only if they ride 75% of their capabilities.![]()

100 percent of your ability would equal the fastest pace you could possibly ride. At this point you would possibly have more oh shit situations and crashes.
I keep it at 75 percent on the street when I know the corners. A pace I am plenty comfortable with and I have plenty of attention left over to see road conditions, police, cars, and any other possible hazards.
Shoot the J!
no, I think that would be riding beyond my ability. I guess I don't think of my riding as a percentage of my abilities.. cause I really don't have a clue what my abilities are, I ride as fast as I feel comfortable at the time. my abilities have kept me out of trouble so far. How much further will a SV lean, once bar end mirrors, and exaust pipes are scraping ?Originally posted by Cheese

Deals Gap for instance. usually takes me 18 minutes in each direction but I have done it in under 14 in the rain

I teach cagers driving techniques.
Drivers refer to it in tenth's.
Driving at 7/8/9 tenths of the ability of the car and collectively themselves.
If I drive a rental car around the track the tires will howl and give up at 6/10's what a track car would do (for arguements sake) but its all relative...................to what is the question.
I interpret the "Codes" translation as not getting in over one's ability (man and machine) if your making corrections to bad driving errors from the previous corner, you'll never correctly (uniformly) improve your technique, get smoother......which is FASTER..............
I get it ALL the time:
How do I do this and that (car specific) Heel - toe, trail brake, lift throttle oversteer, "short shift" and other lame techniques to "better" their driving and blah blah blah................... none of it helps the student, IF they have bad techniques/form/skills........
NONE of it.
WHY?
Because they'll use the technique NOT to shorten a lap time, (which IS their intent...and usually how to do it when one's reached their personal glass ceiling.............) but to compensate for an overcorrection, bad "form" or mistake made just moments ago...........
YOu see, the Student usually spends time trying to patch a bad form instead of fixing/correcting the root problem.
Now if you rode a track at "75%" all the way around and all the time........NOT getting into problems which need correction (taking away from building / hone-ing skills, or establishing a "groove") then you'd learn a lot more from your experience than spending time fixing things because you went up to or beyond your "CAPABILITY"..Kham.....

Heres a condom. I figured since youre acting like a dick, you should dress like one too.
im also wondering what the people's ride ability on the street in terms of percentage if posible. if you ride 25% most of the time can you really improve?

Go to the track if you really want to improve.
I'm 5 seconds off the top lap time of my bike ('99 carbed F4 with someone a lot better than me on it); %88 of bike, %90 of me.
I'm work'in on it!![]()
Street:
%10 -30 of bike('01 GSXR 1k), %50 of me.
Why do you ask?

more saddle time does not = improvement if you'r riding way below your ability say 10-20% most of the time? would that be a fair statement?

25%, 50%, 75%, WHATEVER. Ride within your ability, you stay alive and safe. Like a few others here, I don't buy into the 'percentage' of your ability. I agree that if you ride within YOUR ability, your riding 100% of YOUR ability...
And also to echo what KevinB says, if you REALLY wanna improve, DO A TRACKDAY. You'll learn more at one trackday than you will in five years of street riding as far as lean capabilities, true braking capacity, corner speeds, tire traction, etc...
Again, I've never bought into percentages of YOUR capabilities. The bike, yes. A person's, no. How do you measure a person's capacity as far as percentages? I just don't understand...
Did you grit your teeth and try to look like Clint Fuckin' Eastwood?
Or did you lisp it all hangfisted like a fuckin' flower?
Maybe, if your going 100% you probably get yourself in to trouble, and end up laying that new bike down.
But you can rider harder and not have to worry about any road hazards, cars, trees and guardrails.
well you should be able to ball park. right? i mean if you ride behind the little old lady in a car that wouldn't be 50% of your ability. wouldn't it?Originally posted by Stoneman
