    On Leno tomorrow night

    Nikki, Tommy & Roger Hayden.

"August 1, 2005 - (Courtesy MotoGP) Laguna Seca debut winner Nicky Hayden will appear on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Tuesday, just two days after clinching his second podium in three races at Sachsenring.

Nicky and his brothers Tommy and Roger are poised as in-studio, celebrity guests with actress Kate Hudson leading NBC evening's show.

Tonight Show producer's are interested in showcasing one of motorcycle racing's most memorable moments to date. Nicky's recent MotoGP win at the Laguna Seca Red Bull US Grand Prix; Tommy's incredible 6th place finish racing with no less than a broken hand and Roger's two stellar podium finishes. A replica of Nicky's Repsol Honda has also been requested and will most likely grace the stage in the event Jay has questions regarding the motorcycle Nicky rode to victory.

The Hayden brother segment is being produced by Tonight Show's Steve Ridgeway who has also produced several Supercross segments featuring seven-time supercross champ Jeremy McGrath and a freestyle moto segment with icon Mad Mike Jones."

if by "tonight" you mean "tomorrow night" then yes, it's on "tonight".... and by "tonight" i mean "tomorrow night at 11:35, the same time the Tonight Show has been on every night for the last how many years?"

Cool. Leno is a fan of anything and everything on wheels, so maybe it will be a longer segment than usual.

Here's that pic of Roger... it's pretty ugly.

Bear in mind that this was a BICYCLE crash!!!

He says he was probably going 30-35mph or so...
wearing a nylon road bicycle suit. Imagine 80mph in nylon shorts, flip-flops, no shirt, no helmet (like the fruitcake I saw the other day in NH.

    Good article on SBP

Hayden TV: A Huge Step For Roadracing
    but, what's it all mean?
    by dean adams
    Wednesday, August 03, 2005
For the record, I'm from the generation where I'm still amazed whenever I see motorcycles—any motorcycles—on television. I come from a period in time where it makes it impossible for me to complain about the level of coverage motorcycles get on TV simply because I know all too well what it's like not to have any television coverage of motorcycles or motorcycle racing at all.

Thus, it was quite surreal to see the three Hayden brothers sitting on the couch next to Jay Leno last night on The Tonight Show. Stunning, really.

It's been a banner year for the Hayden clan in the mainstream this year, with Nick on both The Today Show, The Tonight Show, a huge ad in USA Today for his USGP win and a mention in People Magazine. In a bigger picture sense, all this attention from the mainstream begs a question: is this a short-lived trend where (young good-looking, personable) motorcycle roadracers are in vogue in the mainstream, or has a glacial-like change occurred in the way that motorcycle racers are viewed by mainstream America? History has taught us not to make any immediate conclusions. Many were duped into thinking that when Pepsi signed on to sponsor the 1988 Suzuki GP team that it was the last wall between a mainstream audience and sponsorship and bike racing. Clearly, it was neither, as outside industry non-tobacco sponsors are rarer now than they were in the late 1980s. Time will tell.

And, too, it shows that times have indeed changed. In late 1993, I asked motorbike fan Jay Leno if there was any chance that he could have then world champion Kevin Schwantz on The Tonight Show to talk about his world championship and GP racing. Leno asked his bosses, who, according to Leno, only wanted to know if Schwantz was a "jumper" like Evel Knievel and if he could perform those stunts on the show. If he could, they'd consider it. If not, then the answer was no.

While the jury is still out on whether this is a long-term or short term gain for motorcycle racing, one thing is certain—it's a big gain and it's all good.
