LoJack for bikes now available in MA

LoJack is now offering it's anti-theft product for bikes in MA and FL. I just called a local dealer and they quoted me a price of $800.00 for everything. Lo-Jack also offers a full refund if your bike isn't recovered within 24 hours. link to LoJack page is below:

Yeesh.. what do they think we are as clueless as car drivers? It can't be hard to find if you trace the wiring.

Hey Ben, you can always find a lojack, but it won't just be connected to the battery if the dealer does the installation correctly. The idea is that they should be able to find the bike before the thieves even realize there is a tracking system in it.

If i lived where i had to keep a bike outside in the open, and already had one stolen, you can bet your ass i'd have a LoJack AND a paging alarm system. The key with LoJack would be to activate it asap
By reading some of the reports from the theft ring in NYC, within 6 hours the bike were fully dissassembled and all valuable parts ready to ship and the "waist" was on it's way to the landfill

I wasn't belittling the system, I have it in my (cheap) car and I'll seriously consider putting it on my bike. I don't leave the bike unattended outside all that often but it still seems worthwhile.

It just says that if you watch them install it, it voids the warranty. I am just curious how long it would take most of us to find it when doing routine maintenance, as there are so few places to hide the transmitter on a bike compared to a car.

Agreed, the biggest sketch part about the product is how "easy" it would be to find it. LoJack claims this was the very reason it took so long to make a motorcycle product (i.e. they couldnt make it easy enough to hide). I do know that LoJack offers a "early detection system" for cars. If they car gets moved, you get paged, emailed, called (depending on what system you set up for yourself). If *that* service gets transfered to bikes, you may be able to alert police before a theif has a chance to locate the transmitter. In which case, all is golden.

I'm going to call LoJack tommorow and get as much info out of them as I can....I'll post a follow-up afterwards.

It's too bad my bike only cost me $1,000. If I had a more expensive bike, I'd buy lojack for $800; especially in Boston.

I can't see spending $800 on something that wont even deter theives. Maybe if you put a big "protected by lojack" sticker on the tank. I'll just buy the sticker and skip the install...

If it is like the car it is a one time cost, no cost to have the system in the vehicle for it's lifetime once you have it.

It's not necessarily about deterring the theft. Alarms that go off, etc.. don't work anyway. I didn't even get one of those in my car. It has absolutely nothing except the transmitter and the (stock) coded key system. If someone is stupid enouugh to steal it there will be no sign that the lojack is there until the police catch them or the car is parted out.

The idea behind the transmitter is that the police catch the thieves a pretty healthy percentage of the time. Sometimes within a couple hours.

I sell Lo-Jacks at the dealership, I sell Jeeps, most people end up buying it cause of the name, they know it, and the insurance discount 35% on comp...the cost $600 or $800 is a one time cost...

$800 sounds steep, should be able to haggle on that...internal cost is around $395...
