So I'm on the hunt for a new bike.
The short list is:
R1100S
Triumph Scrambler
I know, pretty different, but they both tug at the heart strings.
Anyone have first hand experience with either of them? Bike will be a daily rider to work in the spring and weekend toy.
I could easily just get a Monster or ST3 and be happy (I am the Desmotull), but I want to try something different.

I'd love a Scrambler myself! Have you seen the "Steve McQueen" Triumph?
If I recall, the Scrambler uses the same motor as the Bonnie. I've ridden one and was genuinely impressed with how smooth and happy that motor was at most speeds. Shifted slick, clutch was easy, power was adequate for a spirited jaunt.
It wasn't a rocket, but I did enjoy it.

Not interested in the T-100 with a green paint job. Would be the vanilla Scrambler for me.
The Scrambler does the 270 degree firing interval the Bonnie does 360 like my Thruxton.
They come in green and matt black... Vanilla?![]()
Vanilla as in regular. Lol.
Just get a Scrambler! I would!![]()
Actually my favorite color for the Scram is the white & blue tank.
I like that color scheme too.. The SE has that..
Anybody have anything to say about the BMW R1100S?

Looks like that one is pending sale...
I'll put in another word for the Scrambler. I have an '01 Bonneville, and I will never sell that bike. Absolutely love it. It has loads of personality, and every time I ride it I can't help thinking, "Holy crap, I love this bike!" The Scrambler is essentially the same bike, except the engine, as Ken pointed out, has a 270-degree firing interval instead of the standard 360-degree. The offset power pulses supposedly give better traction in loose conditions.
There's a pretty good aftermarket for the Bonnie family, the bikes are super-easy to work on, and the engine is bulletproof. And they're just plain super-fun bikes to ride -- not speed demons, but not slugs either, and they handle much better than their classic looks would imply, especially with good tires and some suspension upgrades.

I'm a K-bike guy, but rented an R1100S in San Jose once and spent a day on the PCH and roads running up into the hills just inland. It was a great machine for that day trip. Reasonably sporty but not back-breaking, with decent tractor-like power. It favors stability over flickability but it doesn't require too much work to get it to turn in.
I'd strongly recommend trying to spend some time on both machines because there will be quite a bit of difference between them. 2nd Wind sells both BMW and Trumpets so getting a little seat time on the Triumph shouldn't be hard. Finding an R1100s might be a bit tougher unless they happen to have a used one.

I actually rode an R1100S on a short jaunt (it was 28* out) and liked it. The typical "BMW quirks" that are so polarizing didn't bother me.
This thread has made me want a Bonnie or Scrambler.![]()
I hereby dub you: Triumph pusher.
Got a text from Great Bay...
Asking if I want the Explorer "launch" model or the base.
I said, "launch"!
Did they happen to say what's included with the launch model, and what the price is?
