Hey all,
As you may or may not know, I run a Total Control and MSF site. I am looking for a wrecked helmet with a good story behind it to help show the benefits of a FF helmet to my beginner students. WAY too many people see half helmets as an option. What I am looking for is someone to donate a FF helmet that was involved in a Street speed wreck (not track-I'll explain in a bit) where the helmet took some signifigant damage (particularly around the face) and the riders head stayed intact and conscious. Newspaper Article or photos would be a bonus.
The reason I don't want a track crash helmet, is because beginners see that as a situation they would never be in and even the half helmet rider would say "of course I'd wear a FF on the track. They miss the point that people can die from falling over and striking their heads from a standing position. You don't need to be going 100MPH to reap the benifits of a FF helmet.
Again, I am sorry if you are the one reading this and saying "Hey, I have a helmet for John", but I'm glad you are here to read this and hope that your story can convince even ONE of my 1/2 helmet students of the importance of a FF.

Well I have a good one that has rash on both sides. But it's a nice reminder/souvineer. How about a nicely rashed textile jacket from the same crash?
~ Life passes most people by while they're busy making grand plans for it.~
my helmet didn't hit the ground in my recent crash. sorry i'll try harder next time.
i do have a pair of mangled icon full gauntlet style gloves that show the effects of a 120 mph slide. yours if you want them. you can tell the students i was doing 65
I have an old spare... I can get to work on "crashing it" asap.

I've got a glove, pics of the bandages, and x-rays of my hand showing the pins from a 20mph lowside in the wet...
I have one that fortunately is really not bad. It was a street crash that ended up in a field. I know for a fact it kept my face on, but it doesnt have the rash you would get from pavement, so I dont believe it would get the point across that you are after.
You suck at life. Why don't you quit?

My brother wrecked on the street after he hit a tar snake and lost it.
He hit his Chin bar on his full face and broke it. (face plant into pavement at about 35 mph)
Definately saved his face. The helmet is gone though but a nice story.

Why not try contacting one of the helmet companies? They receive them back from some riders and if they don't destroy them all they might be able to send you one...
I love the thing Arai posted on their site a couple of years ago.. photos of a helmet & story from a guy whose head hit a telephone pole in a long slide.. huge dent in the helmet but he wasn't badly injured...
My Arai was so painfully expensive I didn't hit it when I crashed...
Great idea by the way..
Not that it will necessarily resonate with motorcyclists who lean towards the ignorant side but bicyclists almost never wear full face helmets.. it will not take you long in talking to bicycle racers/riders to find people who've had large #s of teeth knocked out in low speed mild crashes. I know racing is again not the thing but last summer a guy I know lost about 10 teeth and shattered his jaw in a racing crash and it only took about 20mph to do that. Very hideous, very expensive on the medical work. It was so bad I didn't even recognize him at first.
Heres som pictures. Wish I had a laid out helmet to give ya. Theres tons of this shit on ride2die.com but I'm afraid the site will leave people thinking ahh I'm fucked anyway so why wear a helmet at all.

I hadn't thought of contacting a manufacturer. I still lthinki that the idea of it being someone local puts a real twist to it. I know what you mean about the Arai$ I have an XXXL head so that's the only helmet I fit in.
The bicycle incident reminds me of the reason I took my godsons razor scooter away. I got him another scooter with much bigger tires. As a paramedic I picked up a 9 year old that had knocked out all four of his front upper ADULT teeth when his razor tire hit a tiny crack in the pavement and it flipped him onto his face. He had a regular helmet on too. I'm not at all about wrapping kids in bubble wrap, but I'm all for keeping them out of things that aren't remotely on their side.

John, I have an old Nolan I can toss on the highway at about 80-85 and make up a story....does that help?
I could strap a mannequin head inside before I toss it......the results could be interesting....I'm serious about this.
I would like to donate my HJC that saved my ass but it doesn't fit your criteria with the frontal impact........that and I want to keep it so I can show people how lucky I am to be here.

Wasn't there a diagram on one of these posts in a different thread that had a picture of a helmet with percentages of where the helmet was damaged based on whatever resarch group they had used? It showed that the face portion of the helmet was damaged in something like 18 to 20% of the time where the top was something like 1%.
