Modular Helmets

I have experience with pretty must every main brand of helmet except for shark so I was going to give them a try. Usually I am a Shoei kinda guy. I was thinking about getting the Shark Evoline Series 2 Modular Helmet for street use only.

From my understanding it is DOT rated in both configurations. The first Evoline series says it meets or exceeds ECE 22-05 standards as well.

The only difference I could find between the 2 different series was a better air and water seal around the visor and thicker padding for more noise reduction in the newer model. I assume the second series is just as safe as the first.



Any one have any experience with it or a modular helmet in general?

Are modular helmets still considered not as safe? Maybe a technology to pass on until refined more?

I had a post up a month ago maybe.. with not much support for the modulars. Only a few members used them to putz around town.. the rest stay far far away

i have a nolan N102 N-Com and it is a good helmet. Modulars are a bit noisier than standard full faces but they do add versatility so it is a trade off. It is cool to be able to open it up around town or go into a store without sounding like kenny from south park when you try to talk to the cashier. I still keep a full face on hand though.

I use a Nolan N103 as my go-to helmet. I haven't even put on my Suomy or Arai RX7 since I got the Nolan.

Compared to my Suomy Extreme and Arai RX7:
-I like the venting better on the Nolan
-The built-in retractable sunvisor kicks ass
-The Nolan is a bit more noisy
-The chin strap is more comfortable on the Nolan. The other helmets tend to pull on facial hair, which bugs the shit out of me
-The chin curtain on the Nolan is a nice addition

If you were to ask this question on another motorcle forum, you'd get different views.

sportbike guys lean toward one-piece full face
sport touring guys tend to like the modulars
adventure riders seem to like the dirtbike/ street crossover helmets like the Arai XD-3

I was interested in picking up a modular helmet, so i went down to Riverside to try on the Evoline. I wear the RSR2 in medium, and the Evoline was a much rounder shape and didnt fit. I tried the Shoei Multitec and it fits pretty well. You will obviously have to deal with a heavier helmet due to all the added mechanical bits.

I would say do what you want and dont worry what other people think or do, always gonna be haters. They have safety standards for a reason and if a helmet meets it in multiple configurations, hey thumbs up. If you ride like an asshat, it doesnt matter what helmet you wear, it will catch up with you eventually.

Thanks Duc, I am going to check out Nolan. The Shark website sucks. Then see if a local places carried both to try on.

The noise factor doesn't really bother me. I always wear ear plugs.

I have the Shoei Multi-Tec and it's very good.
